Responsibilities
Job Summary

The licensed pharmacy technician may work in various settings including Hospital, Retail and Ambulatory Infusion Clinics. Additionally, the technician may specialize in a certain skill set such as pharmacy buyer/inventory specialist, automation technician, IV room sterile processing technician, IV chemotherapy technician and medication reconciliation technician. The job duties assigned will be aligned to the technician and pharmacy supervisor or director agreed upon work assignment. The technician may be assigned to a variety of settings and/or skill sets. Note: technician in physician‑based Ambulatory clinics are not required to be licensed by the State Board of Pharmacy; however, HonorHealth policy requires all technicians to be licensed to allow for floating, cross coverage and flexibility in various pharmacy practice settings.

Essential Functions

General Pharmacy Technician Duties: Practice within all State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and FDA rules and regulations. Preparation of prescription orders, including sterile and non‑sterile preparation (hazardous and non‑hazardous). Unit dose preparation of oral solids, ensuring pre‑packaging records are complete. Dispensation knowledge and functionality of automated dispensing machines (ADM) (Lynx, Pyxis). Preparation of ADM cart fills/ADM stocking and restocking. Run reports from ADMs and/or enter required documentation. Retrieve narcotics and follow all requirements for complete controlled substance distribution. Purchasing/inventory control, assist inventory specialist in maintaining drug inventory levels, credits/returns to wholesaler, stocking/restocking, monitoring expiration dates and unit inspections, maintain a clean workspace, temperature control logs.

Specific Skill Level Duties (in addition to general duties):

IV Room Pharmacy Tech: Compounds sterile or non‑sterile pharmaceuticals, including chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and IV admixture. Assures compliance with quality assurance requirements, ensures medication orders and sterile compounding meet guidelines, assists inventory specialist, monitors temperature, cleans laminar flow hood, verifies equipment calibration, conducts environmental sampling.

Inventory Specialist Tech: Performs purchasing and inventory control functions, reviews stock, procures or requisitions through wholesalers and vendors, validates invoices, maintains inventory levels, manages drug recalls and transfer logs, utilizes technology such as Pharmogistics.

Automation Tech: Oversees all aspects of hospital automation equipment and serves as a resource for technology projects, upgrades, new equipment installations, assists pharmacists with workflows related to ADMs, unit dose packagers, and other technology such as DoseEdge.

Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Pharmacy Technician: Oversees medication use process, prepares and delivers sterile and hazardous medication, complex IV admixtures, chemotherapy and biotherapy admixtures, handles planning, purchasing, inventory control, collaborates with physicians and clinical staff on drug dosing, standardization and quality metrics.

Retail / Specialty Pharmacy Technician: Performs pharmacy technician duties for retail pharmacy under pharmacist supervision, receives prescriptions, fills and dispenses, responds to patient queries, maintains records, assists with insurance authorization and medication assistance programs.

Medication Reconciliation Technician: Obtains, verifies and documents medication history in the electronic medical record, performs medication histories through interviews for patients in ER or inpatient admission, interacts with patients, visitors, physicians and staff professionally.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

Completion of a formalized Technician Training Program – Preferred

High School Diploma or GED – Required

Experience

>10 months pharmacy technician experience or completion of a formalized technician training program – Required

3 years of pharmacy technician experience (retail, hospital, infusion clinics, medication reconciliation or wholesaler) – Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

Licensed Pharmacy Tech (LPT); current license by AZ State Board of Pharmacy – Required

Current Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) issued by PTCB or by CPTC – Preferred

Pharmacy Technician Diploma – Preferred
