DPW Utility Operator

Position Summary
Under the direction of the DPW Manager, this position is responsible for a range of labor‑intensive tasks to support DPW operations including water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, lagoon system maintenance, grounds maintenance of Village owned property and streets, and other duties around the Village.
Rate of Pay
Wages start at $23.83 for un‑licensed operators and increase based on licensing and experience according to the Union Contract between the Village of Lexington and the Operating Engineers Local 324.
Essential Job Functions
Learn to troubleshoot problems hindering the operation and/or delivery of public utilities.
Operate and maintain the water distribution/wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment lagoons.
Keep accurate records.
Operate and maintain associated equipment and systems.
Maintain streets under Village jurisdiction to ensure safe travel.
Perform duties of the Department of Public Works safely and efficiently.
Learn to safely operate and maintain all heavy equipment used by the village.
Obtain DEQ licenses L‑2 and S‑4 within 24 months or four writing periods from hire date.
Work in confined spaces and underground safely.
Grass Mowing
Operate front‑mount mowing tractors, riding/push lawnmowers, and weed whippers or lead blowers.
Use hand tools.
Perform daily equipment maintenance (check oil/gas, tire pressure, clean equipment).
Brush Cutting
Operate chain saws and/or pole saws.
Use hand saws/equipment.
Daily Trash Rounds
Empty trash cans and pick up loose debris on Huron Ave. and around town.
Empty trash cans and pick up debris at Tierney Park.
Clean and maintain fish cleaning station.
Empty trash cans and pick up debris at Lester St. Park.
Empty trash cans and pick up debris at Lexington Mobile Home Park.
Clean bathrooms at Tierney Park.
Pick up beach areas at Tierney Park and the Lexington Mobile Home Park.
Other Duties
Operate municipal vehicles (trucks, tractors, loaders, etc.).
Plow snow and operate snow removal equipment.
Pull trailers with various municipal vehicles.
Operate hand tools (digging, painting, cleaning).
Lifting up to 50 lbs.
Assist in burial services at the Municipal Cemetery.
Work weekends, holidays, and some evening hours.
Participate in DPW projects: roofing, light construction, water line taps, sewer line installation, minor electrical.
Other tasks assigned by the DPW Manager.
Safety is paramount; employees must perform all tasks in a manner that protects themselves, others, and equipment integrity.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Minimum Qualifications
Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License: CDL B or obtain within 6 months of hire.
High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Exceptional attendance and punctuality.
Ability to take orders and complete tasks.
Work well with others.
Operate and maintain all listed power equipment and tools.
Work weekends, holidays, and evening hours.
Work effectively and safely under any weather and work conditions.
Represent the Village of Lexington professionally in public.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The job requires standing for most of the day, exposure to adverse weather, heavy equipment, biosolids, and public interaction. Work may involve ladder work, power tools, and high noise levels.
Must possess a valid driver’s license, pass a drug test and background check.
