Job Summary:

The job of the Migrant Advisor - School is done for the purpose/s of providing assistance to District Migrant students and help them transition to and complete high school, prepared for success in college and career.

Essential Job Functions:

Assists parents and/or students with a variety of activities (e.g. completing Migrant/District forms, providing transportation, moral support, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the academic and social needs of the migrant community.

Coordinates Parent Advisory Council meetings (e.g. contacting parents, phone calls, fliers, etc.) for the purpose of encouraging parent support and involvement in the program.

Informs parents and students of school rules (e.g. absentees, suspension, etc.) for the purpose of providing better communication and/or direction.

Maintains a variety of records and materials (e.g. daily log of activities, program participation, referrals, non-graduating students and active migrant students spreadsheets, student contact logs, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or documentation.

Orients students, families, and volunteers for the purpose of establishing familiarity with the program, services, and required processes.

Coordinate with teachers, college and university personnel, and/or community for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations

Develop a variety of special program events (college nights, financial aid workshops, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to assist students in the successful transition from high school to career, training, and/or continuing education.

Assists Migrant students with personal and academic challenges through advocacy and advisement.

Refers students, parents, and families to local social services agencies.

Refers Migrant students to program-sponsored services (i.e. vision, dental, AWC classes,)

Regularly monitors Migrant student achievement through course grades, standardized test results, and attendance in order to refer for academic services, if needed, and to ensure the student is on track to graduate.

Orients Migrant students with campus for a successful transition

Sponsors and attends extracurricular Migrant Education Program activities

Communicate with Migrant student teachers/counselors regularly to identify any academic challenges or concerns.

Communicate with Migrant parents regarding Migrant Education Program information and student academic achievement.

Coordinates with Migrant Recruiter on student eligibility and services provided for Migrant students.

Assists parents during parent-teacher conferences and meetings.

Refers migrant students to clubs, activities, and athletic coaches and advisors specific to the student's interests.

Participates in workshops, meetings, seminars, community teams, etc. for the purpose of receiving and/or presenting information related to migrant programs.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required (Education & Experience)

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience working in an educational setting.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance

Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

Valid driver’s license

Bilingual (Spanish/English)

Position Type & Work Schedule: (Full-time or Part-time, normal daily hours, months per year)

Full-time, 8 hours a day, Monday - Friday

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; planning and managing projects.

Knowledge is required to understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly, and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:business telephone etiquette; common office machines; concepts of grammar and punctuation; office methods and practices, and the ability to speak comfortably in front of large groups of people.

Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with frequent interruptions; and problem-solving.

Work Conditions:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing.

Note:

May travel to other campuses within the school district.
