Job Description/Requirements
The MongoDB SME will be responsible for designing, governing, and optimizing enterprise MongoDB data platforms that support mission-critical applications and high-volume workloads. This role requires deep expertise in MongoDB architecture, distributed database design, replication and sharding strategies, data modeling, performance tuning, security controls, and operational resiliency. As a key technical leader, the MongoDB SME will partner closely with application engineering, platform/DevOps, infrastructure, and security teams to translate business and technical requirements into scalable, secure, and durable database solutions, guiding teams from initial design through production rollout and steady-state operations.
8+ years of hands-on experience working with MongoDB in enterprise production environments, including design, deployment, and operational support.
8+ years of experience designing and operating MongoDB replication and high-availability patterns, including failover behavior and read/write topology design.
8+ years of experience implementing and managing MongoDB sharding for large datasets and high-throughput applications.
8+ years of experience in performance tuning, including index design, query plan analysis, aggregation optimization, connection/session management, and workload profiling.
8+ years of experience applying distributed systems tradeoffs, including consistency models, replication lag, failure isolation, and multi-region architecture patterns.
8+ years of experience with backup and recovery tooling and strategies, including validation of restores and disaster recovery exercises aligned to RPO/RTO targets.
8+ years of experience with Linux administration and scripting (bash and/or Python) to automate database operations, health checks, and diagnostics.
8+ years of experience integrating MongoDB with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation practices (IaC, configuration management, repeatable deployments).
8+ years of experience with application integration patterns, including MongoDB drivers, connection pooling, ORM/ODM usage patterns (where applicable), and transaction semantics
Communication - Speaks clearly and concisely, tailoring guidance to engineering, platform, and business stakeholders.
Critical Thinking - Diagnoses complex performance and stability issues across queries, indexing, replication, sharding, and infrastructure layers using evidence-based analysis.
Risk Management - Identifies data integrity and resiliency risks early; balances performance and availability needs with durability and compliance requirements.
Task Management - Breaks complex database initiatives into actionable deliverables, aligns tasks to the right owners, and drives execution across teams.
Operational Excellence - Establishes monitoring standards, capacity thresholds, runbooks, and incident response practices that reduce MTTR and improve reliability.
Strong familiarity with project planning and tracking tools (e.g., Jira, Microsoft Project), and proven ability to support multiple concurrent initiatives across the SDLC.
