Job Purpose
The Turnaround Engineer supports the Turnaround Manager as a technical expert, working closely with engineering, planning, and vendor teams. This role contributes across all phases of the turnaround lifecycle, from planning through execution and close-out.
The position also serves as Deputy Turnaround Manager and is responsible for supporting capital project design and execution.
Key Responsibilities
Promote and enforce site safety standards and expectations
Act as site representative for contractor safety during project execution
Ensure compliance with internal safety policies and industry standards
Coordinate with site safety teams for approvals and oversight
Maintain safety as the top operational priority
Turnaround Engineering
Collaborate with turnaround leadership across all project phases
Define and manage the complete scope of work for plant shutdowns
Maintain and track scope within central planning systems
Act as key interface for planning teams and stakeholders
Support detailed planning and resolve technical discrepancies
Review inspection and maintenance data to define work scope
Develop and manage material requirements and technical documentation
Monitor progress, costs, and reporting during execution
Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams
Interface with external vendors for repairs and fabrication
Participate in additional projects during non-turnaround periods
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
~8+ years of experience in a chemical or process plant environment
Experience with shutdowns/turnarounds or similar large projects
Technical Skills
Knowledge of industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, ASTM)
Experience with SAP (Plant Maintenance preferred)
Familiarity with scheduling tools (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project)
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
Experience with engineering/document systems is an advantage
Structured, analytical, and goal-oriented approach
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to influence without direct authority
Leadership and team coordination capability
High resilience in fast-paced environments
Strong organizational and reporting skillsCommitment to safety and continuous improvement
Working Conditions
Field Environment
Exposure to outdoor conditions, including extreme temperatures
Work near industrial equipment, noise, and hazardous materials
Occasional climbing (ladders, stairs) and light physical activity
Primarily sedentary work with computer use

Delivery of turnaround within schedule and budget
Completion of agreed scope
Achievement of safety and environmental targets
Adherence to planning milestones and internal processes
Effective reporting of progress and performance metrics
