Job Summary
Plans, coordinates, and oversees care for patients of any age in the Pre‑Op department. Provides care within nursing standards of practice and the policies of the center. Makes decisions regarding direct patient care needs and communicates appropriate information to other team members. May have additional responsibilities as designated by the manager, which include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, participating in quality improvement audits, and projects.
Responsibilities
Effectively organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel
Use equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care
Confirm that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice
Assist in inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the Pre‑Operative area
Maintain order and cleanliness of the Pre‑Operative area
Perform thorough Pre‑Operative patient assessment required in the outpatient setting
Assist in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient prior to admission
Provide Pre‑Operative instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilities
Describe the perioperative experience to the patient or significant other, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, and how the significant other will participate
Obtain pertinent patient records prior to the patient’s arrival for Pre‑Operative testing
Perform all Pre‑Operative testing (i.e., laboratory work, electrocardiogram, x‑rays, etc.)
Report all abnormal values to anesthesiologist or attending surgeon
Explain informed consent for surgery, patients’ rights and responsibilities, and Pre‑Operative/postoperative instructions
Obtain necessary signatures
Inform patient about routine care and procedures related to the perioperative experience
Discuss all findings with anesthesiologist prior to anesthesiologist’s Pre‑Operative evaluation of the patient
Provide comfort and reassurance to the patient and support the patient’s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
Document Pre‑Operative care according to policy and procedure
Ensure that the patient’s chart is complete on the day before surgery is scheduled
Qualifications
Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
Currently licensed in the state. BLS and ACLS required.
One year experience required in an intra‑operative setting.
Demonstrates clinical competency, leadership, and teaching capabilities.
