General Summary
The Department Chair of Visual and Performing Arts / Choral Music Instructor will work with the Dean to develop and implement engaging learning strategies while supervising and instructing choral ensemble courses, including performing ensembles and select applied voice lessons. This position fosters vocal development, musicality, and ensemble collaboration while also supporting faculty development, instructional design, assessment processes, and student success initiatives across the department. The individual will provide academic leadership, teach assigned courses, assist with recruitment and retention efforts, and collaborate with faculty to enhance teaching excellence and student learning outcomes.

Specific Position Duties

Teach applied voice lessons to music students.

Teach A Cappella Choir and Vocal Ensemble.

Teach Music Appreciation courses for OCTECHS and adult student populations.

Develop and oversee choral events, including but not limited to choir clinics, recruitment events, and festivals.

Teach assigned courses within the curriculum and maintain up-to-date knowledge in the teaching field.

Teach nine hours in departmental courses and demonstrate willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, including dual credit, College Now, web, web-enhanced, ITV , and distance education classes throughout the West Texas area.

Utilize appropriately challenging coursework to help students realize their full potential as learners.

Provide students with written expectations, including syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, and graded evaluations.

Administer assessments appropriate to course content, including a comprehensive final exam measuring mastery of course objectives.

Affirm the worth and dignity of all persons and support the right of all students to learn through inclusive instructional practices.

Maintain an appropriate learning and assessment environment that encourages the free exchange of ideas while upholding academic honesty and objectivity.

Prepare adequately for classes and arrive promptly to all scheduled instructional activities, including lectures, labs, rehearsals, and meetings.

Deliver course material in a clear, effective, and engaging manner.

Address student concerns through classroom interaction, office hours, timely electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.

Department Chair and Faculty Responsibilities

Work with the Dean of Teaching and Learning and the Deans of the College’s schools to develop and implement engaging learning strategies.

Effectively handle routine procedures necessary for the successful day-to-day operation of the department as delegated by the department chair and college leadership.

Submit required reports and schedules in a timely manner.

Maintain effective relationships with professional counterparts throughout the college and the community.

Maintain individual student advisement on degree plans and degree applications to ensure compliance with graduation and completion requirements.

Assist with recruitment, advising, marketing, outreach, and retention initiatives for department programs.

Participate in departmental and campus-wide committees.

Actively participate in college functions, graduation ceremonies, campus events, and community service activities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least 18 graduate hours in Choral Conducting or appropriate credentials to serve as full-time faculty in the discipline.

Proficiency as a performer.

Teaching experience.

Demonstrated computer literacy and instructional technology proficiency.

Proven ability to teach students across a wide range of ages and cultural and social backgrounds, including high school students enrolled in dual credit and early college high school programs.

Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with individuals from various backgrounds.

Excellent presentation skills.

Strong work ethic.
