Job Title:
Kitchen Manager
Department:
Food and Nutrition Services
Education Level and Certification:
High school diploma or GED required. Experience in school food service is preferred; food service, customer service, and management experience is of benefit. Gretna Public Schools will pay for ServSafe certification, School Nutrition Association membership, continuing education, and training. Key attributes: team player, positive attitude, willingness to learn, cares for others - especially children.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting wage is $20.45 per hour (more with school nutrition experience). This is a full‑time position with district paid health insurance.
Reports To:
Director of Food and Nutrition Services and Building Principal
Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks
Oversee the daily preparation and lunch service to students, managing all aspects of nutrition services in the assigned school building.
Order, receive, store, and manage the inventory of food supplies in accordance with school menus and district policies.
Perform quality control by inspecting raw and cooked product. Analyze services or processes to evaluate and improve service or performance.
Handle and prepare food of all types according to food safety standards and regulations. Manage one's own time and the time of kitchen staff.
Train, supervise, and coordinate the activities of kitchen staff including food preparation, service of food, equipment use and maintenance, and all cleaning procedures.
Maintain a clean and safe kitchen and servery area. Inspect supplies, maintain equipment, and monitor sanitation practices to ensure conformance to established standards.
Provide safe and appropriate meal accommodations for students with special diets, preventing cross‑contamination and other risks. Collaborate with students, families, nursing staff, and other personnel as needed.
Adhere to the code of ethics of the District for non‑certificated staff. Provide a high level of service to students and school staff. Develop and maintain positive, professional working relationships with students, parents, building staff, and colleagues within the department. The kitchen manager must serve as a positive role model for staff and students.
Maintain all kitchen and temperature logs. Record production and operational data on specified computer applications.
Adhere to all federal and state USDA regulations and State and local food codes.
Adhere to all District policies, rules, regulations, and supervisory directives.
Maintain confidentiality of information concerning staff, students, and parents in accordance with law and District rules.
Handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts, or otherwise negotiate with others. Communicate appropriately and fully as required.
Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by the Director of Nutrition Services, Principal, or other supervisors.
Working Conditions
Inside kitchen and servery.
Exposure to extremes of heat and humidity, high temperatures from cooking operations, cold temperatures in walk‑in coolers and freezers, hazards of moving machinery, hot cooking surfaces and equipment, hot steam, slippery floors, and sharp objects.

At‑will. This position is an “at‑will” position and may be terminated, with or without cause, at any time in the sole discretion of the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee.

The essential functions of the Head Cook position include: (1) regular, dependable in‑person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and performance responsibilities which require effective teaching and communication skills; and (3) the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements.
