The Opportunity:
The Senior Designer, Packaging Design is responsible for leading the creative development and execution of packaging design solutions that support brand strategy, product differentiation, and regulatory compliance. This role ensures packaging concepts are innovative, manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with marketing, sustainability, and business objectives while maintaining high design standards across all deliverables.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
Develop innovative packaging concepts, structures, and graphics that support brand positioning and consumer engagement.
Translate marketing briefs, product requirements, and technical constraints into effective packaging designs.
Collaborate closely with Marketing, Product Development, Engineering, Procurement, Regulatory, and external vendors.
Prepare production-ready artwork, including die lines, print specifications, color management, and material selection.
Review proofs, prepress files, and production samples to ensure design integrity and quality standards.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing workload to meet critical deadlines.
Mentor junior designers by providing guidance, feedback, and best practices in packaging design and execution.
Continuously monitor packaging trends, materials, printing technologies, and sustainability innovations.
May be assigned to other projects and duties
What you need to succeed:
Expert proficiency in packaging design tools (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Innotools, InDesign; familiarity with 3D visualization tools is a plus).
Strong understanding of packaging materials, printing methods, structural design, and production processes.
Solid knowledge of brand systems, typography, color theory, and visual hierarchy as applied to packaging.
Working knowledge of regulatory and labeling requirements relevant to packaging (e.g., consumer goods, food, or industrial products).
Strong communication and presentation skills, capable of articulating design rationale to both creative and non-creative stakeholders.
Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Packaging Design, Industrial Design, or a related field.
7+ years of professional experience in packaging design, preferably within consumer goods or manufacturing environments.
Proven experience managing packaging projects from concept through commercialization.
Demonstrated ability to work with external agencies, printers, and suppliers.
Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
