Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner APRN Role
We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated PA or APRN to join the busy Cardiac Surgery Department under the direction of a cardiothoracic surgeon. The PA/APRN will perform a variety of duties including:
First assist cardiovascular surgical procedures
Endoscopic vessel harvesting
Pre‑operative history and physical examination
Post‑operative care in an outpatient clinical setting and patient education
Support patient care from admission to discharge in service, Step‑Down, and ICU
Manage multiple patients with varied critical illness, comprehensive physical assessments, interpretation of diagnostic results, hemodynamic/ventilator management, and invasive procedures
Perform arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes, and removal of pacer wires under training and supervision
Role Scope
In consultation with physicians and the care team, the PA/APRN develops plans for further evaluation, referral to specialists, and provides appropriate treatment within the scope of practice. Problems outside the scope are identified and referred appropriately.
Location & Setting
SVMC, 2800 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT 06606 – inpatient cardiac surgical services.
Schedule
Full‑time salaried with rotating coverage: day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday.

Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited PA or APRN master's program
Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a PA or APRN in Connecticut
Certification or eligible to be certified as a PA or APRN
Minimum 2 years experience in cardiovascular surgery or in a critical care setting
First assistant experience and endoscopic vein harvesting skills preferred
Support for Practice
Dedicated support through the Office of Advanced Practice
