Phoenix Children’s is seeking a dynamic and strategic Director of Nursing Services to lead the Main Operating Room and PreOp/PACU departments. The Director will oversee a high‑acuity, fast‑paced surgical environment, ensuring delivery of safe, family‑centered care while advancing strategic growth initiatives and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated success in perioperative leadership within a pediatric setting.
The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational management of multiple departments and/or locations. This position is also focused on service line strategies and programs. The position assumes responsibility for financial oversight, positive customer experience, performance management, process improvement, planning and directing departmental/unit leaders and staff. The director designs and evaluates standards of practice, regulatory compliance, systems, and processes to optimize care excellence in an efficient, effective manner while supporting the mission, vision, values and strategic objectives.
Position Duties
Financial Management
Develop operational plans, initiatives, budgets and programs that support patient care strategies at the enterprise and operational unit levels.
Manage and meet throughput and productivity metrics and variances for staff and programs assigned.
Ensure capital planning for the departments and maintain 3‑year plan.
Manage and meet operational budgets/targets.
Partner with legal and finance to assure Phoenix Children’s obtains most optimal contract terms.
Work in partnership with finance to ensure patient billing is captured.
Human Resource Management
Develop and manage performance trends and staffing plans to meet patient care volumes.
Manage human resources within the scope of labor laws and hospital policies.
Apply recruitment techniques and strategies to fill leader and staff vacancies.
Apply individual and team interview techniques to select qualified applicants.
Oversee development and evaluate onboarding process and content for leaders and staff.
Conduct manager and staff evaluations, assist leaders and staff with setting goals, implement continuous performance development and initiate corrective action as needed.
Ensure a Just Culture environment.
Performance Improvement
Collaborate with Quality and Enterprise Services to assure care is patient‑centered and evidence‑based and ensure standardization across multiple departments.
Facilitate and maintain strong external relationships to monitor national and local trends and identify best practice metrics.
Monitor effectiveness of customer service strategies and partner with unit leadership to implement improvements.
Monitor and address customer service issues directly related to care.
Direct and manage daily operations to ensure patient care meets professional and regulatory standards.
Lead efforts to improve quality across the service line and lead efforts for survey readiness.
Strategic Management
In partnership with other leaders and physicians, develop, implement and/or lead key initiatives to provide high quality patient care.
Accountable for strategic goals and project outcomes.
Contribute to a culture of innovation to drive change and improvement.
Monitor and assess that all services in place meet the needs of our diverse patient population.
Participate in strategy discussions related to growth and expansion and lead efforts on expansions and renovations.
Leadership and Training
Provide oversight of leadership and technical direction to managers, clinical supervisors, and staff.
Lead departmental and enterprise change management efforts.
Act as the key leader in coaching and training.
Anticipate the needs of department to ensure services are in place to attain optimal outcomes.
Ensure staff competencies are completed per regulatory requirements.
Relationship Management and Influencing Behaviors
Develop relationships across the enterprise necessary to communicate and carry out nursing and organizational strategies and operational plans.
Collaborate and manage relationships with senior executives and operations staff.
Identify issues that require immediate attention and apply principles of crisis management to handle situations as needed.
Influence other leaders by role modeling good communication and professional behavior. Apply motivational theory and act as a change agent. Assist others with problem solving skills.
