General Summary
The Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, and execution of infrastructure and construction projects from pre-construction through completion.
This role assists in estimating project scope, coordinating schedules, managing material flow, and supporting project financial performance. The Project Engineer works closely with superintendents, subcontractors, and customers to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and profitably.
Projects may include work for NCDOT, municipalities, and commercial clients. This position is ideal for someone looking to grow into a Project Manager role within a construction environment.
Typical hours are Monday through Friday, with extended hours, nights, and weekends as needed based on project demands. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in estimating project scope, costs, and bid preparation
Perform quantity takeoffs and support development of construction estimates
Review project plans, specifications, and contracts for accuracy and completeness
Coordinate schedules, materials, and subcontractors with field operations
Track project progress, timelines, and deliverables
Support project financial tracking, billing, and cost control
Prepare and maintain project documentation, including change orders and reports
Communicate project updates with internal teams, customers, and stakeholders
Assist in managing subcontractor performance and scheduling
Ensure compliance with safety policies, MSHA, OSHA, and project requirements
Monitor quality of work and adherence to project specifications
Support continuous improvement and process efficiency initiatives
Provide leadership through collaboration and accountability
Perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documents
Experience with estimating and quantity takeoffs preferred
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Analytical and problem-solving skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and construction-related systems
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred
1–5 years of experience in construction, project coordination, or estimating preferred
Experience with NCDOT, municipal, or heavy civil projects preferred
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Combination of office and field-based work
Exposure to outdoor construction environments and changing weather conditions
Moderate physical activity including walking job sites and uneven terrain
Occasional lifting (up to 50 lbs)
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday standard schedule
Extended hours, nights, and weekends as required based on project demands
