The Laboratory Supervisor is a management position with 2 or more direct reports and oversight of a large laboratory department. The completion of the department's technical and strategic processes defines this position's success. Within the laboratory, this position will serve as an Analytical Chemistry subject‑matter expert and must maintain current knowledge of trends and developments in technology, techniques, and regulations while directing and providing high‑level technical expertise on routine and highly complex issues, procedures, and policies. Additionally, this role develops and advises on the establishment of department standards of operations, attends events and interacts with external and internal agencies representing the department professionally. Outside the laboratory, this position is responsible for collaborating with senior leadership to create and manage metrics to measure and analyze department and personnel effectiveness while planning the utilization of department resources, including supplies and resources. This role also collaborates with human resources to post job advertisements and offer letters, leads department meetings and execution of training requirements of department staff. Completion of performance evaluations and leading disciplinary meetings is also a part of this role. This position will require not only a high level of technical expertise but also business acumen to make sound strategic decisions and provide sound advice.

Work Schedule
Days and Hours of Work vary by assigned group and tasks, depending on business needs. The schedule will be discussed with the supervisor for the needs of the company and department. Some flexibility is required for occasional extensions outside the normal schedule and weekends may be necessary to meet business needs.

Position Duties

Strict Adherence to Standard Laboratory Operations and Quality Management Systems (QMS).

Ensures all data and test results performed are reviewed for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with company, industry, and regulatory guidelines and procedures.

Serves as a pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry subject matter expert for internal and external agencies.

Provides technical direction on routine and complex issues and procedures.

Collaborate with the Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Director, and other senior leadership.

Advises, guides, and/or directs on operations activities of the department.

Responsible for appropriate planning and utilization of resources to meet departmental and company goals and objectives.

Sets, measures, analyzes, and reports on Departmental metrics to accurately describe departmental performance, including financial activities, error reduction, growth, and performance indicators.

Ensures all safety programs are executed to the highest standards and quality control.

Review reports of the Corrective Action / Preventive Action (CAPA) system for adequacy and completeness before submitting for final approval and verification.

Tracks and verifies all Analytical Laboratory personnel and outside contractors are properly trained to conduct assigned activities.

Collaborate with the Laboratory Manager and other senior department leadership on changes to department policies and procedures to increase output and reduce testing errors within regulations.

Performance of personnel management duties including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, timecard review, evaluations, and disciplinary actions.

Review, approve, and audit timecards per company policies and procedures with the strictest time requirement.

Completes all Performance Evaluations within the strict time‑sensitive deadlines.

Collaborated with the Human Resources Department on recruitment activities, including workforce and IT requests, placement of job postings, schedule of phone and in‑person interviews, and notification of job offers.

Tracks, verifies, and completes employee action forms, including but not limited to performance evaluations, training, development, and disciplinary.

Leads disciplinary meetings.

Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in techniques and technology relevant to the field and stays current on industry, company, and departmental methodologies, terminology, and regulations.

Tracks and ensures corrections to actions to critical instruments, systems, and processes when found to be out of specifications or regulations.

Adhere to, use, and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Laboratory Safety Equipment, and identify hazards that may arise. Including the ability to wear a full‑face respirator in addition to standard Personal Protection Equipment.

Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent Diploma.

Work Experience

3 years of experience in Analytical Chemistry Data interpretation plus…

3 years of experience in Analytical Instrumentation including but not limited to HPLC, GC, and IC, and…

2 years of experience in Employee Management including recruitment, interviewing, hiring selection, coaching, mentoring, disciplinary actions, and terminations.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent Diploma with 4 years of experience in Analytical Chemistry Data interpretation. Preferred in addition to the other requirements.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional Laboratory environment using typical protection equipment (Eye protection, Gloves, Lab Coats, etc.).

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Essential duties of laboratory environment with periodic exposure to chemicals, solvents, and other environmental substances, including but not limited to odors, and varying temperatures.

Exposure to the use of chemicals with the classification of Toxic, Corrosive, Flammable, or Oxidizing.

The noise level is moderate.

Primarily dominated English‑speaking workplace.

Attendance at the office is required.

Physical Requirements

This is a partially sedentary role; however, a short daily walk between buildings is required, and some filing is required.

This position would require the ability to lift 50 Lbs. (If an object weighs more than 50 Lbs. ARL requires this to be a two‑person job or the use of carts.)

Ability to sit and stand in front of a computer and/or laboratory equipment for extended periods, with intermittent twisting/bending to reach instruments or supplies surrounding equipment. Routinely stand and walk in the performance of duties.

Ability to use hand strength and finger dexterity to perform grasping and fine manipulations of precise equipment.

Operation of standard office equipment.

Must be fluent in written and spoken English to receive and communicate information for standard and complex operations and emergencies clearly and accurately.

Requires visual acuity to read and write words and numbers, and to see in the normal visual range, including the ability to distinguish colors and shapes with or without correction.

Requires hearing communications accurately with or without correction.
