Job Overview
The Elementary School Teacher is responsible for creating a supportive, engaging learning environment that fosters students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. The teacher must comply with all applicable Board policies, procedures, and supervisory directives, and consistently meet or exceed the performance standards defined by the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System.
Essential Job Functions
Arrive at school each day at an appropriate time designated by the principal, ready and prepared to complete all assigned duties.
Develop and deliver high-quality, standards-based instruction that supports the educational goals and objectives of the school.
Completion of all assigned and/or accepted extracurricular and non-instructional duties in a timely and professional manner:
Bus duty
Cafeteria supervision
Playground duty
Supervision of extra-curricular activities (with licensing restrictions)
Service on committees
All other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent, principal, or other supervisor(s)
Participate in required staff meetings and student-related meetings, including those for students with special needs.
When the employee is absent, provide detailed plans for all classes/assigned duties during the period of absence; anticipate absences when possible and keep emergency lesson plans on file.
Deliver instruction that ensures attainment of educational goals and objectives; prepare daily well-prepared lesson plans to help ensure superior delivery of the curriculum program.
Participate in all required staff meetings and student academic meetings, including those for students with special needs, in a professional manner.
Complete and transmit all required reports and other documentation in a timely and professional manner.
Respond to all parent inquiries, complaints, and/or concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Direct complaints regarding work environment to the appropriate supervisor(s) and avoid confrontations with co-workers.
Manage students’ behavior to minimize disruption to the educational environment and refer students, as necessary, to the administration for disciplinary action.
Seek clarification whenever unsure about any of the requirements of this policy.
The failure or unwillingness of a teacher to comply with professional standards of conduct and performance may result in contract non-renewal or disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from employment. In all matters concerning a teacher’s compliance with this policy, consideration shall be given to the impact on the education of a student or group of students and on the overall educational environment of the school.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements
Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Must be able to: walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, or perform repetitive motions; use visual acuity in preparing and analyzing written or computer data; visually inspect small defects and/or small parts; operate a variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job specific equipment and tools; determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work; observe general surroundings and activities; communicate by spoken word to express or exchange ideas and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; safely work in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish positive relationships with students; deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations; work with both children and adults with disabilities; talk, i.e., express or exchange ideas by means of spoken words; and hear, i.e., perceive nature of sounds by ear.
