Postdoctoral Fellow - Invasion Scientist
Full time, three-year fixed term position researching emerging invasive plant risks by analysing online ornamental plant trade trends.
Join our Pest-Management and Conservation team as a Postdoctoral Fellow contributing to innovative research on emerging invasive plant risks driven by online trade. In this role you will analyse 15 years of e‑commerce data to understand sales patterns, pricing, and geographic spread of ornamental plants, helping inform policies that reduce biosecurity threats across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Some tasks of the role include:
Developing a risk index for emerging species using online trade dynamics
Assessing the practicality of sales bans to limit online trade
Evaluating whether pricing differences can reduce sales of high‑risk species
Integrating findings into an emerging invasion risk index
Providing recommendations on risk and surveillance needs to stakeholders
This is a three-year fixed term role working 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE) at our Lincoln University Campus. The salary is fixed at $80,000 per annum.
You will bring:
A PhD in a relevant field and a developing research record
Proven ability in data analytics, machine learning, and handling large datasets
Experience in data management, including optimising online searches and metadata practices
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Effective organisational skills with initiative and self‑motivation
Ability to work constructively with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds
