Boiler Operator - Building Maintenance Specialist
The Facilities & Services department of South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking an experienced boiler operator to be a part of the team in the heating plant. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining the campus heating plant to ensure reliable heat and hot water delivery to approximately 80% of SDSU facilities. Ensures boilers run at optimal efficiency with minimal environmental impact through continuous monitoring, adjustment, and adherence to best practices in plant operations. The Energy Systems Division of Facilities and Services manages the production and distribution of the heating and cooling for campus. Our staff of engineers and technicians continually assess new technologies and energy options to assure SDSU utilizes the most efficient and reliable systems both environmentally and fiscally.
This position is located in Brookings, SD. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
Job Responsibilities:
Operate high pressure (150PSIG) gas and oil-fired boilers and associated equipment in the Heating Plant
Perform full range of maintenance activities and repairs on Central Heating Plant equipment
Maintenance and repair of hydronic heating and cooling systems across campus
Maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems (HVAC)
Perform planned preventative maintenance on building equipment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of: Boiler operations Methods, tools and equipment associated with boiler operations Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word and Excel) and computer software applications and systems
Skill & Ability to: Properly adjust and operate boilers and plant control systems to achieve high operating efficiency and minimal pollution while burning natural gas or oil Troubleshoot, calibrate, repair and replace faulty instrumentation and control systems in the heating plant and throughout campus Calculate boiler combustion efficiency Safely use tools Work alone or as part of a team Communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing Lift up to 50 lbs Work in confined spaces Read digital control panels, gauges and meters Interpret trend data boiler and plant equipment operation Respond to call backs after hours, weekend and holidays during non-heating season
Required License: Valid Driver's License Refrigeration certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of first date of hire.
