Phlebotomist

Job Specific Competencies:
Demonstrates effective interpersonal relationship skills by greeting all patients courteously and attempts to meet the patients needs to the best of his/her ability.
Collects specimens from patients of all age groups after checking patient identifiers are correct, using acceptable methods in venipuncture or capillary collection and confirm tubes are adequately filled to ensure testing can be completed for all tests.
Resolve unusual test orders by contacting clinical staff, lab manager, pathologist or reference lab before collecting or processing specimen.
Processes specimens received into the lab by centrifugation of the sample, delivering to correct department or process sample to be sent to reference laboratory.
Correctly uses JCMG communication systems to include: EHR, Orchard, telephones and paging system.
Performs waived testing as trained following written procedures.
Collect drug screen specimens.
Stocks phlebotomy chair and phlebotomy area and notifies appropriate personnel when supply is getting low or orders from reference lab.
Complies with all CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, AAAHC guidelines and JCMG Lab Policies and Procedures.
Prioritizes incoming specimens, processing and distributing to the appropriate areas for processing in accordance with the order status.
Perform departmental clerical duties and answering phone.
Assist in training new employees.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED
Previous experience collecting blood specimens preferred for the job
BCLS
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of basic computer systems and applications
Skill in exercising initiative in problem solving and decision-making
Must be able to pay attention to detail
Work Environment:
Will be exposed to the danger of infection from disease bearing specimens, odorous chemicals and specimens.
