Part Time, Non-Permanent Position
The candidates selected to fill the current vacancies will provide program assistance in the Junior Lifeguard Program of the Marine Safety Division. Ideal candidates must possess effective and cooperative communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to relate to a diverse group of people. Hours worked per week may vary and may include evenings and weekends. Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1
June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS Retired Annuitants.
Examples of Essential Duties
Under supervision from the Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division Lifeguards, the Recreation Leader is expected to work on a daily basis with the HBFD Marine Safety Junior Lifeguard Program; perform equipment set-up and break-down; and perform the following: Ability to work in an aquatic environment and be responsible for younger children, in small groups.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience: Some high school and previous experience or related training required. Volunteer service or school-related experience is accepted and should be reflected in the application. Applicants must also be currently or previously enrolled in the Junior Lifeguard Program in Huntington Beach. Certifications: CPR/First Aid training will be provided to the selected candidate(s) upon appointment.

Upon a conditional offer of employment a drug screen (select positions), TB Screening and California Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan fingerprinting must be completed with acceptable results.
Other background reports may also be conducted depending on the position.
Upon hire, employee is subject to further reporting from DOJ via subsequent arrest notification.
The SALARY RANGE is composed of seven steps. Merit step increases are based on satisfactory performance. PROMOTIONS within the City are based upon the merit system principles emphasizing individual ability and utilizing competitive examinations. CREDIT UNION membership is available to all City employees and provides access to low interest loans.
