This is an extended posting for Ferry Oiler positions within the Ferry Division. Multiple Ferry Oiler positions will be filled from this posting. We will be filling positions for the following locations: Cherry Branch and Hatteras. If there currently is not a vacancy at one of these locations, your application will be considered if a vacancy becomes available.
Work in this class involves assisting the Ferry Chief Engineer in the operation and maintenance of engines and auxiliary equipment on board ferry vessels. Employees perform duties in accordance with specific instructions received from the ferry chief engineer and are responsible for the operation, maintenance and inspection of all engines and auxiliary equipment while the vessel is underway. Work includes performance of minor and preventive maintenance assignments while underway and assisting major overhaul of motors while vessel is dry-docked. Employees are responsible for following all safety and Homeland Security rules and regulations. Work is performed under direct observation for safe and efficient operation of all equipment. Employees may perform other duties as required.
Job duties include, but not limited to:
Assist the chief engineer in the operation and maintenance of engines, generators, steering gears, pumps and similar auxiliary equipment. Assist in making minor emergency repairs while underway.
Inspects and greases steering gears; changes oil filters, packs pumps and performs other preventative maintenance work as directed by chief engineer in accordance with procedures and regulations.
In conjunction with chief engineer, maintains and operates all firefighting equipment, maintains a daily log on machinery operations, such as oil changes, quantity of fuel aboard and repairs made to engines.
Assists the marine mechanic in making major repairs and overhauls on motors and auxiliary equipment.
Performs related duties as required.
This position will work shift work - 7 days on and 7 days off. A COPY OF TWIC, VALID USCG MMC DOCUMENT AND MEDICAL CARD MUST BE LISTED ON THE APPLICATION AND PRESENTED AT THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Knowledge of the US Coast Guard rules and regulations governing occupational hazards and safety precautions for engine room work aboard ferries.
Knowledge of the marine engine room.
Skill in constant awareness of engines, generators, and switchboard conditions.
Knowledge of the proper use of hand tools and gauges.
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 - $33,902 - $59,327
Possession of a valid U.S. Coast Guard Oiler Certificate.
Necessary Special Qualifications Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
