Purpose
This full‑time position involves teaching 4–5 sections of upper school history (AP and on‑level U.S. History) to students in grades 9–12. The ideal candidate is a passionate teacher who is interested in building and implementing an innovative, 21st‑century, interdisciplinary program, employing a variety of teaching tools and methodologies. As an effective member of the History Department, this individual is flexible and able to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues. He/she is committed to developing and modifying curriculum to conform with best practices and student needs. The ability to teach a variety of history courses is expected, including both year‑long survey courses as well as passion‑driven semester electives. Experience teaching other content is a plus. Willingness to be a productive participant in the extracurricular life of the school is also required.
Essential Functions
Teach 4–5 sections of Upper School History, specifically on‑level and Advanced Placement U.S. History, delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Statement of Educational Philosophy.
Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as a student advisor.
Offer significant involvement and/or leadership in an extracurricular capacity as a club advisor or athletic coach.
Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school‑wide levels.
Use appropriate technology in support of the curriculum of the twenty‑first‑century global classroom.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Abuse Risk Management Standards
Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.
Attends required abuse risk management training.
Adheres to procedures related to managing high‑risk activities and supervising students.
Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Working Environment
Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
Generally 40% sitting, 40% walking and 20% standing.
Minimal temperature variations.
Off‑site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
Generally hazard free environment.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in History, or related field. Master’s Degree desirable.
Minimum three years teaching in an Upper School setting with experience teaching some combination of Government, United States History, or related content.
Proficiency in educational technology and twenty‑first‑century pedagogy; familiarity with G Suite.
Experience designing and implementing a 21st‑Century history curriculum.
Commitment to participate broadly and cheerfully in the life of the school.
A growth mindset.
Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in various disciplines and at various levels.
