Primary Purpose:

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Safely operate a school bus to transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B or Class A with Passenger and School Bus Driver Endorsements)

Experience:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Vehicle Operation

* Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules

* Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.

* Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify shop supervisor of needed

repairs, when necessary.

* Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.

* Keep records on bus mileage and number of passengers transported, when needed.

* Keep inside of bus clean and request that bus be washed when necessary.

* Make sure that a vehicle has enough fuel before taking it out on an extra-curricular trip or regular route.

* For extra-curricular trips, when refueling is required, also check engine oil levels and coolant levels.

Student Management

* Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.

* Communicate directly with parents in a timely manner when students cannot correct their behavior on their own while on bus or at a bus stop.

* Maintain discipline consistent with school district expectations, as stated in the \"Code of Student Conduct on School Buses.\"

* When necessary, report student discipline problems to the Director of Transportation by completing a written \"Bus Conduct Report\" in a timely manner.

* Instruct students on safe bus riding rules and regulations.

Safety

* Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses, including local school district policies and procedures.

* Before each route or extra-curricular trip, inspect bus by checking tires, lights, brakes, horn, windshield wipers and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.

* Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflectors.

17 Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform Director of Transportation or shop personnel of any conditions that are not correctable.

* Report any hazardous conditions along the route, if it compromises the safety of the transportation operation.

Other

* Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office, other buses, and school campuses, only when necessary, following appropriate radio procedures.

* Be available to work irregular hours as needed.

* Attend and complete required training program to maintain state safety certification.

* Perform any other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

Position Summary: Drives bus to safely transport students over specified routes to local or distant points according to established transportation schedule. This position will work approximately 30 hours/week, Monday through Friday with opportunity for additional hours via afternoon and evening field trips.
Essential Functions:
Assists students embarking and disembarking vehicle and be able to safely evacuate students during an emergency
Regulates heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort
Complies with local traffic regulations
Maintains constant radio contact and reports delays or accidents
Reports break downs, including flat-tires, and requests assistance or replacement bus
Inspects bus and checks gas, oil, water and litter before departure
Inspects bus for damage to interior (seats, etc.) and exterior (dents, broken lights, etc.)
May transport students on field trips or athletic events
Qualifications
A high school diploma or general education diploma (GED) is required
Able to communicate effectively with all school constituents
Must be at least 25 years old and have at least 1-year successful driving experience as school bus driver
Must have a clean driving record and pass Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check
Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
Ability to add and subtract simple numbers; Ability to transfer simple numbers legibly to transportation logs
Must have or be eligible to obtain a valid, current Florida CDL license C or D within reasonable period from date of hire; class B license with a P & S endorsement is required
Must have use of both hands, both feet, be able to sit for long periods of time, have eye-to-hand coordination
The employee will be required to pass Dept. of Transportation (DOT) physical; employee must be able to pass the physical mobility test and emergency evacuation test and will be required to submit to testing periodically
Requires successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug screen

Position Summary
Eugene Public Schools is taking applications for regular, substitute, or trainee school bus drivers for current and anticipated openings. Drives District buses to safely transport students between bus stops and schools, on field trips, or as assigned.

POSITION PAY

For TRAINEES: $18.00 - Route and Bus Driver Training
For SUBSTITUTES: $21.43/HR on call (No Benefits)
For REGULAR: $21.43 - 26.89/HR PAY GRADE 9 (Benefits)

Essential Functions:

Drive regular route school busses as prescribed by assigned route and time schedule, and specified bus stops. Modify route temporarily in response to traffic or weather conditions.
Initiate and administer discipline and reward systems to control student passenger behavior. Assign seating and train students in safe riding practices, street crossing, and emergency evacuation procedures.
Perform pre-trip inspection of bus brakes, tires, emergency exits, lights, instruments, emergency equipment, and general operability; maintain interior cleanliness of bus.
Complete required reports of odometer readings, bus malfunctions, student conduct and trips.
Attend and participate in required classroom training programs, departmental meetings and planning sessions.
Drive busses for special excursions as assigned.
Communicate problems to District supervisory, routing and maintenance personnel or school administrators as necessary. Operate two-way radio.
May be required to drive Special Education routes as scheduling and/or relief driving requirements dictate.
Perform related work as required.

Senior Driving Assignments: Drive busses for field trips, athletic events, and other out-of-town special excursions as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to operate any and all District buses and bus equipment.
Ability to drive safely under pressure of time constraints, student misbehavior, hazardous road conditions, and traffic demands.
Punctuality and ability to pace activity to meet time schedules.
Knowledge of student behavioral management techniques and ability to control large groups of students.

Senior Driving Assignments: Demonstrated ability to drive all District buses safely in a variety of conditions, possession of an Oregon Class B CDL with proper endorsements, possession of an ODE School Bus Drivers Certificate.
Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid State of Oregon Driver's license
Five years (5) of successful driving experience.
Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.
Ability to successfully complete a physical examination, required DMV testing, required ODE classes, and First-Aid training.

Senior Driving Assignments

Three years experience as a Bus Driver.
Successful completion of advanced classroom and in-vehicle training and driving tests.
