Overview
Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse, also referred to as a Labor & Delivery Nurse (L&D RN) or Delivery Room RN. A Labor and Delivery RN provides comprehensive care to mothers and newborns before, during, and immediately after childbirth, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, assisting with deliveries. They also perform clinical tasks, ensure patient safety, educate families, and coordinate closely with the healthcare team to respond to both routine and emergency situations.

Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to):
Maternal Monitoring:
Monitor blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, and signs of complications such as preeclampsia or infection.
Labor Support:
Assist with positioning, breathing techniques, and comfort measures (massage, cold packs, birthing balls, hydrotherapy).
IV Therapy:
Start and maintain IVs for hydration, medication administration, or anesthesia.
Patient Advocacy:
Act as advocate during labor, including for birth plans or cultural needs.
Newborn Care:
Dry, warm, and assess the baby after birth (Apgar scoring), assist with cord clamping, and administer prophylactic medications.
Qualifications
Education, Experience, Training
Current and valid state RN License.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree preferred
BLS certification within 30 days and maintain current
ACLS certification within 90 days and maintain current
NRP certification within 90 days and maintain current
Basic Fetal monitoring within 60 days of hire and maintain current
AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certificate within 12 months
AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring certificate preferred
STABLE preferred
