Job Title: Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician
Job Description
The Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician conducts field and laboratory testing of soils and concrete on active construction sites. This role involves traveling to job sites, collecting and testing material samples, and documenting results to support quality assurance for civil and structural projects. The technician works primarily in the field, handling materials and equipment, and plays a key role in ensuring that construction materials meet required standards.
Responsibilities
Travel to construction sites to collect samples of soils, concrete, and other construction materials.
Perform field testing of soils and concrete when appropriate based on sample size and quantity.
Transport collected materials from job sites to the office or laboratory for further testing and analysis.
Conduct basic materials testing in accordance with established procedures and standards.
Move and handle various objects, tools, and equipment around construction sites, including lifting and carrying items up to and above 50 pounds on a regular basis.
Operate equipment such as wheelbarrows to move concrete and other heavy materials safely around the site.
Document test procedures, observations, and results clearly and accurately in written reports.
Communicate effectively with team members, site personnel, and office staff regarding job progress and findings.
Work independently in the field once trained, managing daily schedules and assigned job sites responsibly.
Follow safety guidelines and site protocols while working on active construction projects.
Support structural and construction inspections by providing accurate and timely material test data.
Essential Skills

Previous experience in labor or field-based roles such as landscaping, farming, construction labor, or field service work.
Ability to perform physically demanding work, including regularly lifting and moving items of 50 pounds or more.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with team members and site personnel.
Ability to read and write clear, concise, and accurate reports.
Capability to work independently in the field after initial training.
High level of reliability and trustworthiness in handling company equipment, vehicles, and test documentation.
Interest in construction, civil engineering, or materials testing environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience or familiarity with construction materials testing (CMT) is beneficial.
Experience as a construction engineering technician, field technician, service technician, or engineering technician is an advantage.
Exposure to soil sampling, concrete sampling, and materials testing processes is preferred.
Experience supporting structural inspection or construction inspection activities is helpful.
Knowledge or coursework related to civil engineering, civil/structural engineering, or construction engineering is a plus.
ACI or ICC certifications, or an interest in pursuing these certifications, are considered strong assets.
Willingness to pursue additional education, training, and certifications with company support.
Work Environment
The role is predominantly field-based, with most time spent outdoors on active construction sites and driving between the shop and job locations. During the first few months, the technician rides with an experienced team member to learn procedures, sites, and expectations. After training, the technician receives a company truck to drive independently to assigned job sites. Job sites are typically construction projects in the early stages of building, with rough terrain, active equipment, and changing weather conditions. Work involves regular handling of tools, testing equipment, and heavy materials such as concrete. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of CHARLOTTE, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $24.00/hr.
