Public Information Associate (Communication Specialist)

Responsibilities
Content creation
Write and edit news stories and other communication materials.
Identify and develop stories that highlight UIC research and OVCR activities.
Conduct interviews with faculty, staff, students, and subject‑matter experts.
Build narratives, collaborate with interviewees and editors for accuracy, proofread and refine language, ensuring alignment with university style guidelines.
Publish stories to the OVCR website and share across social media platforms and partners.
OVCR website management
Support OVCR departments, research cores, and institutes in website development and maintenance.
Keep content relevant, engaging, and up‑to‑date; remove outdated material and broken links.
Incorporate images, videos, and infographics to enhance engagement.
Design and build new unit websites with appropriate content strategy.
Social media management
Create, schedule, and publish posts across OVCR social media accounts.
Engage with followers, respond to comments, and analyze performance metrics.
Develop and update strategies for reaching target audiences.
Internal communications
Prepare updates, memos, and email campaigns for employees and management.
Coordinate communications around new initiatives and events with unit leaders.
Manage OVCR Emma accounts and support units’ email communications.
Collaborate with other UIC units on campus-wide announcements.
Event support
Assist with pre‑event planning, on‑site coordination, and post‑event activities.
Develop promotional materials such as flyers, social media posts, and email campaigns.
Perform related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
One (1) year of professional experience in public relations, journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, radio/television broadcasting, or web/digital media.
Working knowledge of research administration and regulatory compliance areas such as IRB, IACUC, IBC, or sponsored programs, and ability to translate complex research or compliance topics into accessible content.
Master’s degree in an area consistent with the duties may substitute for one year of work experience.
