Organizational Unit Overview
The William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library (Laupus Library) serves as the primary information resource center for the East Carolina University’s instructional, research, and patient care programs in the health sciences. It also serves as a comprehensive information resource center for health care professionals in eastern North Carolina. Laupus Library emphasizes proactive information provision, acquisition of current and relevant materials, reference services that recognize diverse client expertise and needs, and the implementation of new technologies for accessing and managing information.
Job Duties
The Information and Research Services Liaison Librarian provides proactive, library user-centered education, research, and information services using a variety of methods and technologies. This position serves as a liaison to one or more departments, colleges, or schools within ECU’s Health Sciences Campus, primarily to the Brody School of Medicine, and may include other assignments as needed. The librarian works closely with teaching and research faculty to integrate library instruction and research expertise into the curricula and culture of assigned programs, develops and maintains instructional materials for faculty and students in distance education and on‑campus programs, and provides expert search services in a variety of health subject areas.
Primary Responsibilities
Provides expert reference, searching and research assistance, including systematic reviews and other expert‑level searches.
Builds and maintains strong professional relationships with faculty and students, assesses information needs, and responds with appropriate library services and resources.
Develops, markets, and delivers instruction sessions on library and information‑seeking skills and related topics; creates instructional materials such as LibGuides, online tutorials, and online classes.
Provides tours and library orientation classes; develops and delivers formal library classes on a variety of related topics.
Participates in the Laupus Library Systematic Review Service, counsels and educates users on systematic reviews versus other literature searches, and assists researchers with tasks such as meeting federal grant requirements, exploring open access publishers, managing research data, and supporting scholarship and publishing activities.
Works collegially with Access Services staff as part of the User Services division.
Participates in library committees and projects as assigned.
Engages in scholarly activities and professional service, maintaining a professional demeanor, behavior, and ethics.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or international equivalent.
New graduates will be considered for this position; the degree must have been earned prior to submitting an application.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience in an academic or health sciences library, or a thorough understanding of the role and functions of a librarian in the health sciences.
Participation in teams to conduct systematic reviews, practice guidelines, evidence synthesis, consensus statements, and similar tasks.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Adaptability in the changing field of librarianship.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
Willingness to lead projects and committees and champion ideas.
High comfort level with new technologies and the challenges and rewards they bring.
