Executive Director of Public Affairs
Reports to:
General Manager and Public Affairs Committee
Position Summary:
The Executive Director of Public Affairs works to place the Union League Club of Chicago in a leadership position in forming coalitions of like-minded organizations to address issues. The Executive Director of Public Affairs is active in Chicago organizations, such as the Crime Commission, South Loop Chamber of Commerce, and The Better Business Bureau. The Executive Director of Public Affairs acts as the Union League Club of Chicago representative in outside activities and is the Club’s spokesperson. The Executive Director of Public Affairs identifies and maintains contact with outside organizations with interests similar to the Public Affairs Committee program.
Essential Functions:
Assists the Public Affairs Committee in the formulation of the Union League Club’s public affairs goals and objectives
Assists the Public Affairs Committee in implementing and executing the plans and programs and guides them toward actualization
Ensures that there is an appropriate level of support for programs and activities
Directs the preparation and presentation of the Public Affairs Committee budgets and exercises control over expenditures
Serves as the Secretary of the Public Affairs Committee and its Subcommittees; prepares and distributes meeting notices; supervises the taking of minutes of the meetings and supervises the distribution of minutes
Plans and implements programs in observance of commemoration of civic, military and patriotic events
Conducts research into public affairs issues, providing the Committee with information relating to a specific issue and arranging for proponents and opponents to discuss the issues with the Committee
Brings current issues from outside sources to the Committee for review and action
Participates in the formulation of changes or additions to the Club policies relating to public affairs activities
Plans and implements Public Affairs Forums to inform Club membership on civic issues (assists in recruiting speakers, developing program formats, arranging publicity, and managing the administrative details of events)
Researches and recommends for Public Affairs Committee consideration of issues relating to the Primary Corporate Objectives of the Union League Club of Chicago
Prepares Club magazine articles, letters and appropriate displays to inform Club members on civic issues and Public Affairs programs
Maintains Public Affairs records and history
Manages the military affairs and public affairs administrator
Manages the Public Affairs budget
Qualifications and Skills:
Education:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required.
Experience:
Executive Director of Public Affairs should have a successful career with responsibilities in leadership positions; strong ability to communicate both in writing, as well as giving speeches to large and small organizations required. The Director must possess excellent interpersonal skills with diverse groups. The Director should have the ability to conduct and delegate research in the public and private sectors. The Director should be computer literate. The Director should have experience in ceremonial and social protocol and be comfortable in social gatherings with all levels of society. The Director should have strong goal orientation skills, and a history of successful project implementation.
Additional Skills:
The Executive Director of Public Affairs must be familiar with the community, its leaders, and its issues, and should have the ability to interact at the highest levels of the civilian and military communities in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Director of Public Affairs must be creative, a self-starter, and possess skills to inspire committees to take appropriate action.
