Oncology Clinic Nurse Practitioner

Position Summary

The Outpatient Medical Oncology Nurse Practitioner (NP)provides comprehensive, patient-centered care within a community hospitalbased oncology clinic. This role supports medical oncologists in delivering high-quality evaluation, treatment, symptom management, and education for adult patients receiving cancer care. The NP contributes to efficient clinic operations and ensures timely access to care in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform detailed histories, physical examinations, and symptom assessments for new and established oncology patients.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with supervising oncologists.
  • Manage acute and chronic symptoms related to cancer and its therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted treatments.
  • Order and interpret laboratory studies, imaging, and other diagnostic tests.
  • Prescribe medications and supportive therapies within scope of practice.
  • Provide urgent assessments to address treatment-related complications and reduce emergency department utilization.

Care Coordination & Patient Support

  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment options, side-effect management, and self-care strategies.
  • Collaborate with infusion center staff and Infusion NP to ensure safe and efficient delivery of systemic therapies.
  • Coordinate care with radiation oncology, surgery, palliative care, genetics, nutrition, social work, and other specialties.
  • Participate in tumor boards, case conferences, and multidisciplinary planning meetings.
  • Support transitions of care, including hospital follow-up and survivorship planning.

Quality, Safety & Program Development

  • Follow institutional policies, clinical pathways, and national oncology guidelines (NCCN, ASCO, ONS).
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and workflow optimization efforts.
  • Support clinical research activities when applicable, including identifying eligible patients.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record.

Qualifications

  • Masters or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current RN and NP licensure in the state of practice.
    • DEA registration and prescriptive authority.
    • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
  • National certification as an Adult, Family, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • 2 years of Outpatient Medical Oncology experience as a Nurse Practitioner
  • ONS/ONCC chemotherapy and biotherapy certification (or obtained shortly after hire).
  • Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) (obtained within one year of hire)

Preferred

  • Experience in an oncology infusion or outpatient oncology setting
  • Experience in an academic or research-driven environment.
  • Strong skills in symptom management and urgent oncology care.
