Primary Purpose
Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures and fixtures.
Typical Duties
Examines blueprints to determine dimensions of structure.
Lays out floor‑plan and cabinetwork using rule, framing square, and calipers.
Selects materials and structural units such as lumber, prefabricated doors, cabinets of wood or plastic, paneling, and inspects them to ensure conformance with building code and local ordinance.
Determines sequence of activities related to fabrication, assembly, and erection of structure.
Assigns workers to tasks like cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, and laying flooring.
Inspects work performed by subcontractors, including ductwork, wiring, and pipe installations for conformance with specifications.
Installs doors, builds stairs, and lays hardwood floors.
May supervise workers engaged in building timber structures, such as cofferdams, trestles, and supports for concrete forms.
May make cost estimates for contracts.
Performs other duties as described under Supervisor.
May be designated according to area of specialization.
Requirements
Physically, the worker must be capable of exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Intellectually, the worker must be able to apply and interpret principles of rational systems (bookkeeping, engines, electronics, building), solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; must have basic competencies in algebra, geometry, and shop mathematics. The worker must be able to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work.
The amount of specific job training required to learn the techniques, information, and facility needed for average performance in this position is from 4 to 10 years.
