Job Description
The Natural Resources Department seeks a motivated intern to support a variety of environmental, data, and outreach-focused projects related to responsible resource development, mine closure, and natural resource education. This internship is designed to provide meaningful, hands‑on experience while supporting departmental priorities across data management, geoscience, mine closure planning, and community‑facing education. Project assignments will be tailored based on the intern’s background, interests, and skill set, with opportunities for both technical and non‑technical work.

The intern will be primarily based in the Anchorage office and may have opportunities for supervised field visits, community outreach, or regional travel depending on project needs and intern interest.

NANA will provide lodging and transportation for applicants outside the Anchorage/Matsu Valley area. For more details, feel free to reach out! Internships will run from June to August with some flexibility based on individual availability.

Responsibilities

Data Management & Organization: Support document management improvements, including organization and migrating files to SharePoint; create and apply folder structures, naming conventions, and basic metadata; conduct quality checks to ensure completeness and accessibility of key departmental files.

Environmental & Geochemical Data Support: Compile and quality check regional environmental datasets (e.g., rock, soil, and water chemistry); standardize units, detection limits, and metadata; classify data by lithology and location and flag anomalies or gaps.

Geoscience & Mine Closure Support: Review selected datasets and reports to support conceptual models related to mine closure; assist with summarizing oxidation zones, water‑rock interactions, or waste pile characteristics; support review of mine closure or end‑land use scenarios.

Education & Outreach Projects: Help translate technical resource and mine closure information into youth‑friendly educational materials; support development of classroom or community‑facing activities related to land use, resource stewardship, and environmental decision‑making.

Assist with outreach efforts or educational partnerships (e.g., Alaska Resource Education), as appropriate.

General department support: Participate in meetings, site briefings, and learning sessions; prepare short summaries, presentations, or progress updates; engage with multiple mentors across the Natural Resources team.

Qualifications

Applicants must be a shareholder of NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., or a direct descendant of a shareholder. In accordance with NANA's Shareholder Preference Hiring Policy, priority will be given to NANA shareholders first, followed by shareholder descendants. Must be 18 years or older.

Must reside in Anchorage, Alaska. This may be waived for the appropriate candidate willing to accept temporary relocation to Anchorage during the program duration.

Current undergraduate or recent graduate in natural resources, environmental science, geology, chemistry, engineering, education, or a related field preferred.

Must have completed two years’ worth of college credits, to include college‑level Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) courses, and one college‑level or advanced placement (high school) statistics course.

Intermediate to advanced computer proficiency (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or Google Workspace).

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Ability to read, summarize, and synthesize technical information.

Willingness to learn and work independently with guidance.

Additional Qualifications

Familiarity with Excel‑based data analysis.

Introductory coursework in chemistry, geology, or environmental science.

Familiarity with basic statistical parameters, such as standard deviation and relative percent difference.

Experience with document management systems (SharePoint, Google Drive, or similar).

Interest in mine closure, land use planning, and/or natural resource education.

Experience in creating educational or outreach material.

Past participation in ANSEP, GeoFORCE, or Alaska Resource Education programs.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather:

Occasionally exposed to moderate/harsh weather conditions; requires work to be done both inside and outside.

Noise level:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but the employee may be exposed to varying levels of noise at times when in the field or at project sites.

Description of environment:

Intern must be able to work in less‑than‑ideal offices, facilities, or situations. In the field the employee will be required to walk over uneven terrain, for periods up to an hour or longer, and may be exposed to loud machinery. The overnight accommodations in villages are limited and the employee may be required to sleep on the floor or cot in a local school, or tent camping outdoors.

Physical requirements:

Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel:

Employee may travel up to 25% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs. If travel to village flight/accommodations to be covered.
