Occupational Therapist - Inpatient

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet VHA policy eligibility requirements and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications

United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Proficiency : Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Education and/or Experience : The individual must meet at least one of the following:
Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist.
Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and two (2) full years of graduate education in a related field.
Master’s degree or higher in occupational therapy.
All degrees must be from an ACOTE‑approved program (pre‑2005 programs are acceptable).
Foreign graduates must hold a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice occupational therapy in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Certification : Candidates must possess a current National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification as an OT.
State Licensure : Candidates must possess a full, current, and unrestricted state license to practice occupational therapy in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Grandfathering Provision: Former VHA employees who meet the standard at the effective date may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision.
Employees who do not meet all basic requirements at the time of appointment may be reassigned, promoted up to the full performance level, or placed in lower grades, but not beyond the full performance level or in supervisory positions.
Physical Requirements: Occupational Therapy is considered “medium” strength work, requiring the ability to exert varying levels of force (20–50 lbs occasionally; 10–25 lbs frequently; up to 10 lbs constantly).
Duties

Major duties include:

Evaluations: Conduct evaluations in the inpatient setting at the bedside, OT clinic, CLC, and outpatient settings; gather information from the medical record, interview veteran, family, caregivers, and providers; observe; administer standardized and non‑standardized tests; analyze occupational demands.
Intervention: Develop an intervention plan in collaboration with the veteran, family, caregiver, and social support; consider team goals, veteran context, activity demands; set objective, measurable goals with timeframes; apply accepted OT approaches (health promotion, skill remediation/restoration, performance maintenance, task or environment modifications, disability prevention).
Maximization of Outcomes: Reassess veteran response to treatment at regular intervals; modify treatment plan and goals as needed; recommend appropriate discharge from OT based on response, collaboration, and ongoing needs.
Health and Safety: Practice proper infection control; use clinical equipment safely; follow procedures for emergencies and disasters.
Clinical Information: Record patient care activities per VA, Rehab, and OT regulations; participate in secure email communication and multidisciplinary meetings; collaborate on plans of care and discharge planning.
Administrative: Maintain required records (encounter entry, consult completion, etc.); submit prosthetic consults promptly; monitor clinic supply inventory; develop and conduct interdepartmental in‑services and training on rehabilitative and OT care; supervise OT interns and volunteers; contribute to improvement of the OT intern training program.

Work Schedule: Full‑time, Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑4:30 pm. Telework not available; position is not virtual.
