Tobacco Compliance Intern
Division of Public Health

The City of Worcester is seeking two (2) Tobacco Compliance Interns to work for the Division of Public Health within the Tobacco Control Program. Under the direction of the Tobacco Inspector, the position focuses on reducing youth access to tobacco products through compliance inspections. The Tobacco Compliance Interns will accompany the Tobacco Inspector in visiting establishments to assess adherence to state and local tobacco regulations. This includes attempting to purchase tobacco products to ensure retailers comply with the law. Additionally, the intern will support the Tobacco Inspector by providing insight for policy drafting, addressing youth-related concerns, and contributing to community education efforts on enforcement and compliance.

Essential Elements

Conduct annual compliance checks with the Tobacco Coordinator at 100% of establishments that sell tobacco products in the community

Provide tobacco prevention through enforcement of current local policies

Provide technical assistance to local boards of health in writing new policies

Address youth access and the effects of environmental tobacco smoke

Educate the community around current and emerging tobacco products

Ability to work in the community with the tobacco Inspector visiting retailers as assigned

Willingness to learn

Minimum Requirements

Currently enrolled in an educational institution, High School diploma/equivalent

Must be between the age of 16 and 20 years of age

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience working with children and families from diverse cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities

Interest in public health, tobacco prevention, youth engagement, or health education

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in community settings

Bilingual or multilingual

Demonstrated commitment to health equity and serving diverse populations

Prior experience collecting and recording data or participating in compliance/enforcement activities

Salary
$15.00 hourly, part-time, non-benefitted.
