
General Service Technician - Carpenter

Position Summary
Reporting to facilities management, the General Services Technician - Unlicensed Carpenter is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and repair of items associated with the carpentry field including but not limited to doors, windows, ceilings, floors, etc. The position also requires significant knowledge and recent full-time experience in the preparation, decoration and protection of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Following standard operating procedures as continuously defined by Boston Medical Center South, complying with safety norms and regulations and meeting reasonable deadlines for efficiency, to construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools and conforming to local building codes including but not limited to the following:
Apply all types of primers, lacquers, paints, varnish, etc.
Install doors and windows, make and install shades, repair furniture, and repair and install classroom fixtures.
Perform all type of remodeling and repair work on interiors and exteriors of buildings.
Use hand tools and operate table saws, drill presses, and other power tools.
Prepare surfaces for painting by use of implements such as sandpaper, brushes, steel wool, scrapers, and/or cleaning detergents.
Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler.
Select premixed paint, or mix required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.
Apply paint, varnish, stain, epoxies, urethanes, enamels, lacquers, or other protective coatings using brushes, spray gun or paint rollers.
Carry, set-up and move ladders, staging, and drop cloths as needed.
Clean equipment and tools by use of solvents.
Cut, shape, and assemble wood, composition, and/or plastic sections with shop tools and equipment such as planers, jointers, shapers, routers, sanders, and various power saws.
Assemble prepared components for various structures, including chairs, desks, cabinets, bookcases, picture frames, and paneled doors.
Prepare structures for finish applications by planning, shaping and sanding; using hand and power tools.
Read and interpret plans, sketches, and shop drawings for milling and fabrication.
Determine type and dimensions of wood stock to be used.
Maintain and clean equipment and work area.
Responsible for the daily preparation of the parts and tools for each day’s activities.
Complete work in a timely and workmanlike manner.
Coordinate work functions with fellow workers.
Coordinate with assigned manager for the use of non-stock hospital tools and ensure they are returned to the appropriate place in a timely manner.
Participate in hospital wide internal training/meetings as required.
Maintain and safeguard hospital tools in a professional manner.
Maintain equipment manuals and repair records.
Maintain “in house” inventory of parts for emergency/off-hour repairs.
May direct work of student workers as assigned.
Respond to on-call and overtime requirements as needed.
Perform similar or related duties as required.
Creates and maintains timely and accurate maintenance logs utilizing the hospital’s continuous maintenance management system (CMMS).
Understands and adheres to hospital operating procedures pertaining to the use of resources, time tracking and logging of timely and accurate maintenance and repair activities utilizing division and hospitals systems of record.
Expected To Perform Some Or All Of The Following
Performs all general maintenance duties.
Makes rounds as assigned.
Plans and performs preventative maintenance schedules as assigned.
Troubleshoots all designated equipment and reports any problems.
Prepares stock orders for purchasing for all maintenance.
Paints all painted and unpainted surfaces as assigned.
Plans and performs the construction, installation, renovation, maintenance and repair of the carpentry related functions.
Sets up and cleans meeting rooms according to the specifications of requester.
Collects and disposes of trash.
Performs minor repairs on equipment used in performing duties.
Assists and supervises outside vendors with the installation, repair, maintenance etc., of designated equipment/systems.
Delivers equipment and supplies throughout the health center as instructed.
Responds to calls/requests for maintenance issues from staff.
Make regular rounds on all floors and corrects problems in related field.
During the winter season, snow and ice removal for all pathways, ramps and sidewalks.
Evaluates the building and mechanical equipment periodically in order to determine the need for repairs and to ensure proper safety, efficiency of operation and compliance with all set standards.
Confers and consults with the health center administration on matters pertaining to necessary equipment and preventative maintenance to recommend work orders and/or maintenance contracts.
Maintains compliance with all prescribed safety procedures and encourages others to do likewise, resulting in no preventable accidents.
Responsible for receiving all delivered supplies from various vendors at the loading area and unpacking and storing them neatly and securely.
Performs the various functions to operate all machinery/equipment, including lawn equipment and snow blowers.
Ensures work areas are clean and free of debris upon completion of all tasks.
Utilizes hospital’s Core Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
Adheres to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.

Compensation Range
$26.35- $39.16
