Overview
SHIFT: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday 11:00PM - 7:00AM.
The Campus Safety Dispatcher processes calls regarding emergency and non‑emergency situations in a 24/7/365 operation. This position handles calls for service via radio, telephone and other electronic means from throughout NYU’s global enterprise, ensuring an appropriate response is dispatched in accordance with University policy and procedures. The successful candidate is an expert multitasker who can remain calm in high‑stress situations and provide excellent customer service. The Campus Safety Dispatcher is comfortable utilizing complex computerized systems and interacting with all members of the University community (students, parents, visitors, faculty, and staff). Responsible for maintaining the status of DPS personnel on shift or special assignment within the Computer‑Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
Responsibilities
The Campus Safety Dispatcher processes calls regarding emergency and non‑emergency situations in a 24/7/365 operation, ensuring a timely dispatch of appropriate resources in line with university policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Required Education
High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education
Bachelor’s degree in security or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience
Previous customer service experience
Preferred Experience
3 years customer service experience or 3 years’ experience in a public safety environment (e.g., police, fire, EMS, security, dispatch).
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Ability to understand and work within emergency communications systems including multiple two‑way radio systems, Computer‑Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, alarm receiver, video monitoring systems, access control systems, emergency mass notification systems, and telecommunications systems.
Demonstrated willingness to make split‑second decisions in accordance with university policy and procedures.
Demonstrated sensitivity to the team atmosphere and commitment to addressing problems which could impair the atmosphere of the Communications Center.
Knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Windows.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent typing skills.
Ability to learn the practices and procedures involved in public safety communications and operate radio/telephone receiving and transmitting equipment.
Ability to learn the geography of the university, the jurisdictional boundaries of the area served, and the location of streets and important buildings.
Ability to work under stress and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations, adjusting quickly to changing situations.
Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
Strong ability to multitask.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Association of Public Safety Communication Officials (APCO) Public Safety Telecommunicator certification.
Ability to accurately type 40 words per minute or more.
Ability to operate telephones, radios and a multiple screen computer console linked to a computer‑aided dispatch communications system.
Compensation
Hourly rate salary range: USD $24.521 to USD $34.521. This represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
