Maintenance Technician I
The position summary states the general nature and purpose of the job. Overall accountabilities are defined in this section. Maintenance Technician I is the introductory-level maintenance position that assists with the upkeep of electrical and mechanical equipment in our fast-paced food-processing environment.
Responsibilities
Ensures safe operation of equipment and machinery, safe use of tools, and safety of others working in the immediate area.
Assists with troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems, electrical controls, electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, blowers/fans.
Resolves equipment malfunctions by evaluating performance breakdowns, identifying root cause, safely repairing the equipment, and taking actions to prevent recurring failures.
Assisting with installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining mechanical equipment, piping systems, and electrical controls/components in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, local regulations, and Smithfield safety policies.
Performs visual and basic preventive and predictive maintenance schedules on mechanical equipment such as pumps, Wrap Machines, Dock Doors, Dock Locks, and Dock Levelers used in a warehouse environment.
Coordinates with supervisor regarding all short-term repairs and long‑term repairs to minimize production downtime.
Receives work order/request, reviews to determine tools, equipment, time, manpower, parts, and supplies needed.
When responding to crisis calls will always arrive at the scene with the basic tools and equipment necessary to perform work.
Ensure all assigned work and preventative maintenance tasks are completed in a timely manner.
Follow all work instructions and document all appropriate records to meet requirements set forth by OSHA, EPA, USDA, and Warehouse management.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Working knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems as they pertain to the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair is preferred.
High school diploma or GED and 1+ year of related experience and/or training in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing environment; or 4 years’ direct experience in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing maintenance environment.
Vocational Diploma, Technical Diploma, or associate's degree from a technical maintenance or vocational school, a plus.
Possess the ability to function effectively in a team environment and interact productively with all levels of team personnel and outside contractors.
Ability to operate a forklift, genie lift, or scissor lift.
Can understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and write the following: work orders, instructions, daily reports, and machine manuals.
Ability to receive and relate orders/information using various communication devices.
Basic computer skills and ability to work independently are also required for this position.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
The warehouse environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds utilizing the buddy system or specifically designed lifting devices.
Specific vision includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
