Kennel Tech/Attendant

Under minimal supervision, performs duties on a daily basis to maintain the animal kennel areas and provides general care and feeding of animals.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions may include the following. Must possess required knowledge skills, abilities and experience and to be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Other related duties may be assigned.

Maintains shelter areas by cleaning and disinfecting animal kennels; removes litter and debris; washes feeding utensils, pans, equipment, etc; performs minor equipment and kennel repairs.

Maintains storage room in a neat and organized manner; inventory of food, litter, cleaning supplies, etc.

May be required to assist with and/or preform animal euthanasia in accordance with State law and department standards.

Performs bathing and grooming of adoptable animals.

Provides general care and feeding of animals; may assist with administering medication and vaccination to animals; exercises animals in designated areas.

Observes animals for any signs of early disease, illness, or distress; reports findings to the Animal Control Officer and/or the Police Chief.

Assist with receiving animals; greets and provides general customer service and information to citizens.

Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent

One (1) year experience dealing with animals as animal veterinarian technician or related experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficient abilities in problem solving, conflict management and customer relations techniques

Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, fellow employees, elected officials, supervisors, citizens, business and community groups

Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information and to comply with all record retention laws

Proficient skills to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing

Comprehensive understanding of all City safety rules and operating procedures

Ability to maintain proficiency and knowledge of current and/or new regulations/legislation within areas of responsibility

Licenses and Certifications

Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

The incumbent performs work in both an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to hazardous and unpleasant conditions in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; exposure to dust, odor and temperamental stray animal hazards

Work requires frequent stooping and climbing, lifting 100 pounds, standing, walking, sitting, twisting, pulling, pushing and occasional working in tight or confined areas and utilizing tools/chemicals to euthanize animals as required

Required to work some nights and weekends, during extreme weather and/or emergencies and be "on-call" as assigned.
