Building Service Worker (141) – Multiple Positions
Under the direct supervision of a Building Service Foreman, the Building Service Worker performs custodial work to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of NIU facilities, including routine, intermittent, and restorative cleaning across academic, research, residence hall, and athletic buildings. The role includes floor, restroom, classroom, office, and exterior cleaning, snow and trash removal, and operation of maintenance equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Flooring Cleaning – 20%

Dust mop, sweep, wet mop and scrub floors using caution signs.

Renew or renovate floor finishes, spray buff as needed to maintain high gloss.

Strip, scrub, neutralize and refinish floors as directed.

Vacuum carpeted areas, extract and shampoo carpet, spot clean stains as needed.

Restroom Cleaning – 20%

Clean and sanitize restroom floors, toilets, urinals, and sinks.

Clean and sanitize lights, walls, windows, mirrors, chrome surfaces, showers, tubs, vents, and benches.

Maintain soap and paper supplies daily per departmental procedures.

Classroom & Office Cleaning – 20%

Wash walls, polish furniture, and clean bookshelves, frames, and other surfaces.

Dust horizontal and vertical areas.

Clean blackboards and erasers daily; maintain chalk, erasers, and paper supplies.

Shampoo upholstered furniture.

Snow & Trash Removal – 20%

Remove snow/ice from entryways and stairs, spread salt, pick up litter and debris.

Develop a schedule for cleaning waste containers.

Empty recycling and garbage containers into appropriate receptacles.

Clean building and exterior glass to the highest possible level.

Keep elevator tracks clean, vacuumed, and polished; replace bulbs safely.

Clean fixtures and diffusers when bulbs are replaced.

Operating Equipment – 5%

Operate automatic scrubbers, power sweepers, wet pick‑ups, dry vacuums, blow‑mers, backpack vacuums, window washers, and floor machines safely.

Clean, store equipment and janitorial closets after each use.

Remove and dispose of moss, dirt, and debris from equipment before use.

Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of cleaning solutions and custodial methods.

Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 lbs.

Ability to bend, stretch, twist, reach, and stand for long periods of time.

Ability to perform general physical activities requiring use of hands, arms, legs, and whole body.

Ability to tolerate exposure to temperature extremes.

Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience as a custodian, janitor, or cleaner.
