
Sexton/Custodian

POSITION SUMMARY
The Sexton is responsible for general custodial care of the UUFCC building(s) and grounds; effective communication and collaboration with the Minister, UUFCC staff members, Board President, and the chairs of the Building Committee and Grounds Committee; and coordination with contractors and volunteers.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
UUFCC Security
Serves as the primary emergency contact for alarms
Refers to the building calendar and checks regularly when the building has been in use; checks after major events
Makes certain that:
Windows and doors are closed and locked
Lights and air purifiers (HEPA filters) are off
Water faucets in toilets and kitchen are off
Thermostats are on the appropriate program
Reports any issues to the Office Administrator and Building Committee Chair as soon as they are observed.
Supplies
Informs and works with the Office Administrator to ensure that various cleaning and maintenance supplies are obtained either when requested or in anticipation of needs. Note: Wherever possible, the Office Administrator will make purchases using the UUFCC credit card and tax‑free accounts; however in the event that any last minute purchases are necessary and incurred, the Sexton is expected to retain receipts and submit them for reimbursement.)
Helps keep maintenance areas organized: the janitorial closets (upstairs and downstairs); the workroom; the Fellowship Hall closet; pantry closet; outdoor sheds; and boiler room.
Events at the UUFCC
Refers to the building calendar often to be aware of events scheduled at the building
Works a semi‑structured schedule with some flexibility. Must be available on Sunday afternoons or Monday mornings, Tuesday morning/afternoon, and another day later in the week, as coordinated with the Office Administrator
Plans a work schedule so that the building is clean and arranged for all major UUFCC‑run functions, especially Sunday Services
Arranges facilities, chairs, and tables as occasionally required/requested by UUFCC staff
After use of the building for a major event: cleans and tidies areas used if necessary and checks the security of the building. If a room was left in disarray or needed cleaning after a rental event, informs the Office Administrator
In the event of snow and if the snow removal service has not already done so, help to salt the sidewalks and remove any snow from the sidewalks, especially when prior to a large event (including Sunday Services)
Trash, recycling, compost
Keeps waste bins throughout the building in order and empties them when necessary
Empties the compost bins in the building when necessary
Cleaning
Performs regular cleaning of the UUFCC building, as outlined separately in the Sexton Detail Duties document.
Building and Grounds
Regularly inspects the property to identify maintenance needs - a list of inspection expectations is outlined in the Sexton Detail Duties document
Where possible, does maintenance
For needs that require a contractor, coordinates with the Minister and Office Administrator, and/or Chairs of the Building and Grounds Committees
Work with contractors when necessary, collaborating with the Office Administrator, Building Committee, or Grounds Committee, helping to meet, oversee/monitor, and coordinate
Collaborate with the Building and Grounds Committees to ensure that needs in the building and property are met for inspections
Staff
Attend weekly staff meetings to update the staff on any property issues
Fill out a monthly property report and one annual property report
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be able to climb stairs to access tools and supplies
Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds
Must be able to climb a 10 foot ladder
Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with the staff and volunteers
Be able to communicate effectively: have access and ability to communicate through email and by cell phone, and be able to type a report on the computer
Have project management and multitasking skills
Understanding of general building repairs, painting, and other basic maintenance
Have sufficient understanding of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and roofing, in order to oversee and coordinate with contractors
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Sexton serves at the direction of the Minister, Office Administrator, and the Board President, in collaboration with the volunteers of the Building and Grounds Committees.
The Sexton must be able to sidestep and/or delay inappropriate requests by volunteers/members, and report these to the Minister.

UUFCC Staff must be aligned with and supportive of UUFCC’s efforts to promote diversity, inclusion and acceptance of persons of all genders, race or ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
Hours
This is a 10‑14 hour per week position. The actual work schedule will be developed in consultation with the Sexton candidate who is selected for the role, based on the duties and responsibilities required.
Review of the position will occur on a quarterly basis.
