Position Summary
Under the direction of the Group Exercise Coordinator, the Group Exercise Instructor leads safe, engaging, and inclusive group exercise classes for members of varying abilities and backgrounds. This role plays a key part in delivering high-quality member experiences while building authentic relationships and fostering a sense of belonging within the YMCA community.

Key Responsibilities

Lead dynamic and safe group exercise classes that support member health and well-being

Create a welcoming, inclusive, and motivating environment for all participants

Build positive relationships by engaging members before, during, and after class

Adapt instruction to meet diverse fitness levels and individual needs

Prepare class space and equipment; ensure safe usage at all times

Maintain accurate class attendance records

Respond promptly and professionally to member questions, feedback, or concerns

Collaborate with team members and support overall wellness initiatives

Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development

Promote YMCA programs and connect members to additional resources

Support additional responsibilities as needed to meet the goals of the YMCA and the wellness department

Qualifications

Minimum age of 18

Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification (e.g., American Red Cross)

Nationally recognized Group Exercise or Personal Training certification (e.g., ACSM, ACE, NASM, AFAA)

Multiple certifications or ability to teach a variety of formats preferred

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to build authentic relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Commitment to equity, inclusion, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Ability to actively lead and participate in group exercise classes

Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting

Ability to demonstrate exercises and support participants safely
