ENGINEERING INTERN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves providing research assistance and staff support to the City’s Department of Engineering. The intern position will provide an on-the-job training situation through exposure to many facets of both municipal engineering and government while at the same time contributing to on-going programs, data collection, inspection, surveying and public works projects. Work is carried out in accordance with established policies and procedures, and is performed under appropriate supervision depending on assignment.
Typical Work Activities
Researches assigned projects, analyzes data, and prepares recommendations;
Analyzes cost-effectiveness and overall feasibility of established and proposed programs;
Assists in the conduct of special investigations;
Collects and analyzes data for use in recommending program improvements;
Develops and conducts surveys to gather data as assigned;
Develops public information programs and public relations materials, e.g. production of slide shows and PowerPoint presentations, preparation of draft press releases, preparation of workshop/conference agendas, newsletter articles, etc.;
Interacts with the public in the collection and dissemination of information;
Attends meetings, seminars and workshops and interacts with department heads, staff members, legislative members and leaders and others;
Assists with the implementation of Information Services Technology Plan;
May be assigned to learn and assist in a variety of departments and duties, including, but not limited to, special projects.

Ability to develop knowledge in organizational planning; ability to develop knowledge about the practices of government at various levels; ability to gather and analyze facts, put them in perspective, and use them to reach supportable conclusions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to develop an understanding of the theories and practices of public administration; ability to work well with others; tact; courtesy; ability and willingness to keep confidential information appropriately.
Minimum Qualifications
(A) Must be a currently enrolled college student in the engineering field; OR
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 6 months of experience in engineering or public works activities.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s license.
