Summary
The Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position is located at the Garner VA clinic in Garner, North Carolina. The Garner VA Clinic provides multi‑specialty care, as well as Primary Care, Mental Health, and Urgent Care to approximately 25,000 Veterans throughout Wake County and surrounding counties in Eastern North Carolina. The clinic will also offer a wide range of specialty services including Women's Health, Audiology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Hepatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Urology, Podiatry, ENT, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Optometry, Dental, Pharmacy, Radiology, Laboratory services, and minor procedures such as Endoscopy.

Qualifications

Citizenship – you must be a citizen of the United States.

English Language Proficiency – you must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Experience and/or Education – Experience: six months of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work.

Education: one year above high school that included at least six semester hours in health‑care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, operating room and surgical technician courses, or other courses related to the position.

Experience/Education Combination – an equivalent combination of experience and education is qualifying for entry level, accepting both education and experience.

Grandfather Provision – a Medical Supply Technician (MST) employed in VHA on the effective date of the qualification standard (May 28, 2014) is considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series, and grade held.

For employees who do not meet all basic requirements but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time of appointment: employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level, or changed to a lower grade within the occupation; may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.

Employees appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements.

Employees converted to Title 38 Hybrid status and who subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re‑entry.

Grade Determinations – Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) – GS‑7: in addition to meeting the basic requirements, to qualify for GS‑07 you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑6).

Examples of specialized experience: receiving contaminated critical and semi‑critical RME in the decontamination area; disassembling RME and determining the correct cleaning method (ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers, chemical cleaning agents); inspecting, assembling, and determining correct method and packaging for sterilization (steam, Sterrad, Steris, high‑level disinfecting scope reprocessors); performing and documenting daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment.

Demonstrated KSAs – ability to instruct staff on correct procedures and protocols; skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations; skill in interpersonal relationships with employees, team leaders, and managers; knowledge of sterility principles; ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

Preferred Level of Education – highest performance level from Handbook 5005.

Preferred Certification(s) – SPD Technician Certification.

Preferred Experience – hospital experience in sterile processing and decontamination.

The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) and will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that document cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RME.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑07.

Duties

Provide sterilization, preparation, and supply item and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the medical center.

Work in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team.

Distribute and prioritize workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations.

Assure an even workflow and distribution of the workload.

Revise work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload.

Assign work to staff based on experience and training needs.

Monitor and report on the status of work.

Ensure SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during workflow performance.

Review work in progress or spot‑check work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.

Assess the quality and quantity of work by reviewing cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material, and instrumentation.

Provide information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes, and task completion.

Instruct employees on work‑related activities, policies, procedures, and goals.

Other duties as assigned.

Benefits and Compensation

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8‑hour tours between 0700 and 1800.

Pay: competitive salary and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time offered per year (13–26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).

Parental leave: after 12 months of employment – up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child‑care subsidy: after 60 days of employment – full‑time employees with total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to a monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contribution by VA.

Insurance: federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care insurance programs can be carried into retirement.
