Job Summary
Electrician I assists with installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and performs related facility maintenance work of moderate difficulty, working under the supervision of the departmental director or Senior/Master electricians.
Typical Duties
Reads work orders or receives instructions from supervisor or senior electricians concerning assignments or projects and completes tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
Troubleshoots and repairs electrical circuits.
Performs preventative maintenance on electrical distribution equipment.
Locates inoperative lighting and determines type of lamp or bulb needed; uses ladder or lift equipment, if necessary, to reach and repair light fixtures; replaces fluorescent, HID, mercury‑vapor, and incandescent lamps, as required.
Utilizes test equipment such as a multimeter to determine the presence of electrical power and proper grounding; utilizes hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills, and saws.
Replaces fuses, photoelectric cells, timers, and ballasts, as needed; replaces faulty wiring in electrical systems. Installs new light fixtures, switches, and electrical outlets, following manufacturer instructions and NEC code requirements. Replaces faulty light switches, electrical outlets, fire alarm devices, detectors, and electrical appliance motors; installs and repairs a variety of kitchen equipment and appliances; installs power distribution systems, such as raceways, conduits, and busways.
Communicates in a professional, service‑oriented manner with staff, faculty, and others contacted in the course of work. Performs after hour, holiday, and weekend repairs on a rotating on‑call schedule and as needed in the event of emergencies. Supports university events after hours and weekends on a rotating schedule.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge
Knowledge of electrical theory, electrical maintenance practices and procedures, and applicable NEC codes.
Knowledge of common hand tools, including screwdrivers, drills, and saws.
Knowledge of basic electrical testing equipment used in this role.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to building maintenance, with an emphasis on electrical safety.
Knowledge of and ability to follow University policies and procedures.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical devices and systems.
Ability to perform basic electrical and related building maintenance work in various climatic conditions.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assigned work.
Ability to read, understand, and apply installation and maintenance instructions.
Ability to safely use ladders and lifts and work at heights of up to 50 feet.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program or a trade/vocational school program.
Five years of journey‑level electrician experience.
Licenses and Certifications
State of Texas Journeyman Electrician license required.
Valid Texas driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance carrier.
Employment Requirements
Must successfully pass a background check.
