Chief Deputy Sheriff (Major)
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an experienced and dedicated law‑enforcement professional to serve as Chief Deputy Sheriff (Major). This executive‑level position is appointed by the Sheriff, serves as the second in command, and assumes the responsibilities of the Sheriff in her absence. The Major provides strategic leadership for the agency, assesses the needs of the Sheriff’s Office and the community, and advises the Sheriff on policies, strategic plans, and budgetary priorities.

This position oversees all law enforcement operations, provides organizational direction, and ensures the highest standards of professional service to the community. A successful candidate will provide leadership and supervision for all divisions, including Operations, Support Services, and Administrative Services. Oversee policy and general orders, internal affairs/professional standards, use‑of‑force review, and training programs, ensuring compliance with DCJS standards and best practices. Direct long‑range planning, organizational development, and the effective allocation of personnel, equipment, and resources. Oversee hiring, training, performance evaluations, and professional development for agency personnel. Ensure that citizen complaints and internal administrative investigations are properly conducted, documented, and resolved. Maintain strong working relationships with local, state, federal, and regional partners. Manage budgets, procurement, grants, and the strategic use of technology and equipment. Provide executive‑level guidance on major incidents, operational matters, and agency‑wide initiatives. Promote community engagement and maintain open communication with residents and stakeholders.

Qualifications
Minimum of an Associate’s degree. Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s or advanced degree, professional certifications in a related field, and/or a strong combination of education and experience in law enforcement leadership. Minimum of ten (10) years of certified law‑enforcement experience. Experience should include a working knowledge of patrol, investigations, and administrative functions. At least five (5) years of supervisory experience, including a minimum of three (3) years at the rank of Lieutenant or above. Current law enforcement certification as a sworn officer (Virginia DCJS or an equivalent POST certification from another state), with the ability to obtain Virginia DCJS law enforcement certification through waiver or reciprocity within six (6) months after appointment. Demonstrated experience managing personnel, budgets, operations, and agency‑wide programs. Strong written and verbal communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.

Compensation
Starting salary is $113,121.04, with an excellent benefits package.

Employment Details
This is a full‑time, exempt, appointed position that serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff and requires availability for response to major incidents and urgent operational needs outside of normal business hours. Employment is contingent upon a comprehensive background investigation, including criminal history, driving record, drug screening, and any other assessments required for sworn personnel.
