The Registered Nurse (RN) floats to OPS, PACU, and PAT departments. The RN performs the functions of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care for assigned patients. The RN is responsible for meeting the Standards of Practice, which includes managing all assigned personnel, supplies, and equipment, and for promoting collaboration with all members of the health care team.
Position Responsibilities

PAT Responsibilities

Patients requiring anesthesia/sedation will have an interview/assessment in advance of the surgery/procedure. Patient evaluation integrates clinically indicated testing, consultative services and patient education. The goal of the preoperative assessment is to optimize the patient for the surgery/procedure.
Extensive health history
Appropriate physical assessment
Testing/Referrals as indicated
Psychosocial-family status
Preoperative/preprocedural patient teaching
Development and communication of a plan of care
Documentation and communication of all pertinent information
PACU Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse’s role is to focus on providing postanesthesia nursing in the immediate postanesthesia period.
Basic life-sustaining needs are of the highest priority.
Constant vigilance is required.
Initial, ongoing, and discharge assessment and documentation components include:
Integration of data received at transfer of care
Airway and respiratory/ventilation status
Cardiac and hemodynamic status
Thermoregulation
Vital Signs
Neurological function
Sensory and motor function as appropriate
Condition and color of skin
Patient safety needs
Neurovascular: peripheral pulses and sensation of extremity(ies) as applicable
Condition of dressings and visible incisions
Patency of drainage tubes, catheters, and IV lines
Intake and output
Pupillary response
Medication management
Surgery/procedure specific assessments
Individualized plan of care
Nursing actions and/or interventions with outcome
Anticipation of any needed equipment for receiving unit, as appropriate
Inclusion of family in physical, spiritual/emotional care of patient as indicated
OPNU Responsibilities

The RN’s role is to validate existing information, eliciting additional or new information, reinforcing preoperative teaching, reviewing discharge instructions and providing nursing care to complete preparation for the experience
Verification of patient identification and expected procedure
Review and/or completion of the pre-op assessment
Relevant preoperative status including: VS, skin integrity, diagnostic test results, allergies, home medication review, NPO status, disabilities, limitations, impairments, substance use/abuse, external or implanted medical devices.
Pregnancy testing
Perioperative normothermia assessment and management
Patient safety needs
Relevant preoperative emotional, safety, spiritual, and psychological needs of patient
Prescribed surgical prep completion
Availability of accompanying responsible individual to assist with home care
Knowledge or pre-procedural teaching and discharge planning
Clinical monitoring as indicated
Procedure specific assessment
Documentation and communication of all pertinent information
Post-procedure, the RN focuses on preparation for care in the home.

Level of consciousness
Ambulation
Ability to swallow
Presence of nausea/vomiting
Skin color/condition
Condition of dressing/surgical or procedural site
Urinary status
Patient and home care provider knowledge of discharge instructions
Written discharge instructions given to patient/accompanying responsible individual
Arrangements for safe transportation from the hospital
Provision of additional resources to contact if any problems arise
Experience

At least 1 year of PACU nursing experience preferred.
Education

Basic education necessary for Registered Nurse licensure required.
Special Qualifications Required

Current Alabama or Multi-State RNLicense required or the ability to obtain.
BLS, ACLS, PALS are required. (ACLS and PALS may be obtained within the first 6 months of employment)
