Job Summary
The Nursing Assistant Trainee is enrolled in a learning experience designed to develop the confidence and competence to serve as a caregiver that provides personal care to clients. Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the trainee—in partnership with a preceptor—provides holistic client-centered care that promotes independence and client rights in a safe, caring, and efficient manner. The trainee is required to work within the role of a non-certified nursing assistant and must fulfill all training requirements within the designated timeframe. The program is delivered in hybrid format, including an online curriculum and hands‑on skills development. At completion, participants will be prepared to take state knowledge and skills exams to obtain the Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) or other state certification designation.

Responsibilities

Assist the care team and document client care when appropriate.

Communicate changes in client condition and care‑related concerns to a licensed nurse.

Assist with basic health care needs and activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, undressing, obtaining vital signs, providing psychosocial support, and delivering other personal care as assigned.

Assist clients with transferring, repositioning, range of motion exercises, and walking using appropriate transfer techniques and equipment.

Assist clients with meals and snacks, provide water and nutritional supplements as appropriate.

Assist with housekeeping, laundry services, and other duties as assigned within a non‑certified nursing assistant role.

Follow written and verbal instructions, adhere to infection prevention and control standards, personal protective equipment use, safety, and privacy policies.

Qualifications

High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.

Minimum age of 16.

Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license required within four months of employment.

When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.

For facilities requiring driving, must meet Sanford Category II Driver requirements, including a valid driver’s license and medical qualification to perform essential driving functions.
