Overview
Support Communication and Care—Join Southside Community Health Services as a Spanish Medical Interpreter
Southside Community Health Services (SCHS) is seeking a Spanish Medical Interpreter to help ensure clear, accurate communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers. This role supports equitable access to care by removing language barriers and helping deliver a welcoming, patient-centered experience for the diverse South Minneapolis community we serve.
About the Role
The Spanish Medical Interpreter facilitates spoken and written communication between English- and Spanish-speaking patients and care teams. This position plays an essential role in improving understanding, supporting patient safety, and enhancing access to medical services through accurate interpretation and culturally responsive communication.
Key Responsibilities
Provide accurate interpretation between Spanish- and English-speaking patients, families, and staff during appointments and clinical interactions
Facilitate effective communication during patient visits, care conferences, and other healthcare encounters
Interpret medical terminology, instructions, and everyday language clearly and accurately
Translate written materials while preserving intended meaning and cultural context
Support patients with limited English proficiency in understanding services and care plans
Maintain confidentiality and professional standards during all interactions
Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and clinic initiatives
Assist with administrative duties and additional responsibilities as assigned
What You Bring
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish
Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with diverse patient populations
Professional judgment, discretion, and ability to remain calm under pressure
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Flexibility and ability to manage changing priorities throughout the day
Comfort working with individuals experiencing medical or behavioral health concerns
Commitment to the SCHS mission and values
Qualifications
Two years of interpreter experience, including at least one year in a healthcare setting
40-hour community interpreter certificate required
Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish (spoken and written) required
Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office
Experience in community health or multicultural healthcare settings preferred
