Description
Determines sequence of construction operations and plans job by preparing material lists and making working sketches of construction, scaffolding, prefabrication carpentry fixtures and frames indicating sizes, dimensions, fastening and mating points, bracing members and other details when these are necessary and not furnished, being guided by blueprints, sketches, trade practice and verbal and written instructions. Supplements by actual layout when necessary.
Sets up woodworking machinery such as saws, jointers, wood shapers and routers etc., selecting the proper blade or cutting tool, setting angle of cut, and adjusting speed and guides.
Performs finish carpentry of permanent structures, office partitions, panels, hardwood floors, office doors, cabinets and windows. Saws and finishes to specifications using hand and power tools such as jointers, wood shapers, hand planes, wood routers and other woodworking equipment. Installs door checks and jams, metal and fiberglass ceiling panels, fiberglass battings, cuts and fits wooden flooring in trucks and trailers. Positions component parts in carpentry fixtures for prefabrication or built on location following blueprints or sketches or making determinations by trade practice. Nails, screws, glues component parts, fastens them or completed sections in permanent position. Finishes by sanding.
Performs the fabrication and installation of permanent stenciled and/or engraved facility signs, which include:
identify Company buildings and locations within Company buildings;
provide direction to pedestrians and vehicular traffic, including caution and warning signs;
identify locations of cribs, columns, and parking spaces;
office nameplates;
identify hazardous information and operational status of machines;
vehicle sign identification.
The duties set forth in this job description with regard to fabrication and installation of signs are not the exclusive jurisdiction of Carpenter “A” and may be performed by other bargaining unit employees.
May be required to operate electronic data entry, tablets, storage, processing and/or retrieval equipment as a routine part of accomplishing normal job assignments.
Basic Qualifications
Experience with common carpentry hand tools.
Experience with power tools such as saws, drills, planers, sanders, etc.
Basic math skills and ability to read blueprints for carpentry tasks.
Experience reading tape measure.
Desired Skills
Door Hardware Knowledge – Expertise with a wide range of door hardware hinges, closers, latches, locks, panic‑bars, access‑control devices.
