Summary
The Specimen Management Specialist is responsible for the receiving and accessioning of all patient specimens, and following established policies and procedures, in a professional manner.
Qualifications
Education:
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
Experience:
Required: Accessioning experience
Duties and Responsibilities
Learns and follows the established standard operating procedures for sample handling and record keeping.
Receives and triages patient specimens.
Assigns each specimen an accession number.
Enter patient information into LIMS database, with strict adherence to HIPPA laws.
Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance, take authorized corrective action, and notify key individuals.
Adhere to quality control policies and document all quality control activities.
Open packages, accession specimens accurately and according to existing protocols.
Scan, check and file paperwork.
Perform routine and non‑routine tasks to carry out the department workflow.
Ensure that the lab cleanliness and safety standards are maintained.
Participate in the orientation and training of the department.
Perform clerical duties as directed.
Maintain compliance with protocols.
Adhere to Code of Conduct as outlined in the Baylor Genetics Compliance Program.
Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.

Frequently required to utilize hand and finger dexterity
Frequently required to talk or hear
Frequently required to utilize visual acuity to operate equipment, read technical information, and/or use a keyboard
Occasionally exposed to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials
