Description
The Justice and Public Safety Cabinet is seeking a qualified Paralegal to provide essential support to the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC). This position is under the Office of the Secretary and will be physically located at the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, Office of Legal Services, primarily supporting attorneys and staff for KLEC.

Key Responsibilities

Draft and prepare legal documents including pleadings, exhibits and subpoenas.

Assist in the management of all phases of case preparation for police officer decertification cases, including maintaining file organization, contacting witnesses, exhibit preparation for administrative hearings.

Conduct legal research and assist with preparation for quarterly KLEC meetings.

Maintain case files and schedule court reporters.

Assist with responses to open records requests.

Research and analyze legal cases.

Some travel is required.

Proven ability to complete complex assignments independently.

A strong ability to multitask.

Experience with administrative law process.

Minimum Requirements
Education:

Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in paralegal science or a bachelor's degree with a minor in paralegal studies OR two‑year program in paralegal studies OR post‑baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.

Experience, Training, or Skills:

Four years of experience as a paralegal or legal secretary.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:

A Juris Doctorate or a law degree from a college of law will substitute for the education and experience requirement.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:

Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Incumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Travel is required.

Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
