This position performs routine cleaning and sanitizing in an assigned area of a school building by following prescribed cleaning frequencies. Under limited supervision, this position is also responsible for floor maintenance, furniture relocation, and maintaining the immediate perimeter of the school building. Shift work may be required.
General Definition of Work:

This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance and cleaning of buildings to ensure a safe, clean, and functional learning environment. Manages a team of custodians, assigns tasks, and ensures work is completed efficiently and to APPA Level 2 cleanliness standards. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance, ensures safety regulation compliance, manages inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, and conducts regular inspections to address deficiencies. Communicates with other departments and building occupants to address needs and concerns. This position is designated as “Essential Personnel,” requiring reporting to the job site during emergencies such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
Essential Functions:
Opens and/or secures buildings
Inspects buildings for safety and cleanliness; refers deficiencies to appropriate personnel; conducts monthly safety reviews and submits reports to the Assistant Director for Custodial Services
Checks heating and cooling adequacy; refers deficiencies to Building Services
Interacts with and counsels custodians on minor conflicts; refers serious infractions to the Custodial Zone Manager or Assistant Director for Custodial Services
Approves and submits time records
Schedules custodial coverage for weekend events
Coordinates work, schedules, and information with evening custodial staff and leadership
Maintains working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook for daily email monitoring and correspondence
Receives deliveries, checks packing slips for accuracy, reports discrepancies to the Assistant Director for Custodial Services
Evaluates practices and facilities to address safety concerns and enforce a culture of safety
Investigates complaints and follows up with appropriate personnel
Follows ACPS Building Services guidelines for ordering custodial supplies
Assists Building Manager with annual performance evaluations
Performs routine cleaning tasks with prescribed chemicals and equipment (trash/recycling removal, sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, restroom sanitation, glass/fixtures cleaning, restocking supplies, sanitizing drinking fountains, walls, vents, chalkboards, baseboards, and other tasks)
Maintains and stores equipment and supplies properly
Responds to requests from building occupants (e.g., setting up meetings, moving furniture, receiving deliveries)
Assists in training and onboarding new custodial staff
Reviews, submits, and monitors work orders; regularly meets with administrators to review work orders
Responds to accidents or potential safety hazards
Performs minor maintenance tasks; refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required; maintains carpet by machine extraction and cleaning
Maintains building perimeter (sweeping, mowing, gardening tasks, snow removal)
Monitors Floating Custodians’ performance and provides feedback
Performs other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to follow oral and written directions, work independently and in a team; general knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment (including heavy commercial cleaning equipment); strong customer service principles; awareness of safety regulations related to equipment operation and hazardous materials.
Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completing high school, with two years of custodial or janitorial experience and at least one year of supervisory or team lead experience. ACPS Custodial Certification may substitute for supervisory experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition to meet physical requirements; negative drug screening and tuberculin test required; valid Virginia driver’s license depending on assignment.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:

Work typically involves walking or standing. Ability to lift 10 pounds continuously, 10-25 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds occasionally. May be exposed to inclement weather and hazardous substances. Daily contact with teachers, students, administration, the public, and other staff. Strong communication and collaborative skills are essential.
Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated on ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
Salary:

$19.10 to $23 Per Hour
