Job Summary And Qualifications
Position Summary: The Infection Control Practitioner plans, organizes, develops, and implements Wesley Healthcare’s infection prevention and control program in accordance to applicable federal, state and local standards. Program components include surveillance, education, consultation, mandated reporting, and regulatory preparedness. This position will assume shared responsibility for the management of surveillance, prevention, and control of infections hospital wide and will collaborate and communicate with other departments to ensure that staff are educated on optimal infection prevention and control practices. Strong computer skills are required. These practices will be delineated, shared, maintained, and regularly reviewed.
Job Responsibilities
Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs.
Surveillance
Implements a surveillance system for the organization
Assesses, develops, and monitors surveillance methodology
Uses written criteria for defining infections
Analyzes surveillance data
Develops forms for recording data
Determines the incidence of healthcare associated infections
Communicates with local and state health departments regarding surveillance, outbreaks, epidemiology, and other information required for preparedness and response activities
Identification and Isolation of Communicable Diseases
Identifies clusters of infections
Recommends and implements isolation precautions
Analyzes antimicrobial sensitivity patterns
Interprets epidemiologic markers in outbreak investigations
Interprets results of laboratory findings
Prevention Practices
Monitors and evaluates the quality of infection control and epidemiology/disease transmission to establish best infection control practices
Collaborates with all departments of the healthcare facility to design and implement strategies to prevent healthcare associated infections, manage healthcare associated infections and multidrug resistant organisms
Works with facility staff to implement infection control prevention practices
Observes and evaluates techniques and practices at all levels of healthcare
Serves as a community liaison and hospital spokesperson to communicate information for public use and publication
Investigates exposures to communicable disease and initiates appropriate measures to prevent the transmission of disease
Completes investigations in a timely manner
Creates a line list of patients involved in the outbreaks
Communicates information to appropriate personnel
Consultation Service
Provides consulting services to healthcare facility departments
Provides clinical expertise regarding management of complex communicability, transmission, and reporting of infectious disease
Performs assessment to identify issues for investigation
Develops a plan of action encompassing facility-wide engagement
Creates strategies to implement plans
Evaluates outcomes
Policies and Procedures
Reviews/revises facility and departmental policies and procedures according to departmental plan
Updates policies to maintain compliance with standards, regulation and guidelines
Presents new policies/revisions to healthcare facility committees
Serves as IC expert in consort with the Infection Control Medical Director for the facility
Conducts reviews of literature as needed to support practices and ascertain best practice implementation
Performance Improvement
Utilizes Quality Improvement tools
Evaluates products and equipment
Takes action to change infection control practice that will improve patient outcomes
Collaborates with the IC team at a division level, including attending meetings, reviewing processes and sharing best practices
Assists in the review of Core Measure compliance and process improvement organization-wide
Oversees infection control practices for affiliated organizations such as dialysis providers
Represents the facility in professional organizations such as APIC
Works collaboratively with the manager of Regulatory Compliance to assure congruence with TJC, CMS, CDC, and KDHE requirements regarding infection control
Education and Training
Participates in orientation programs and required annual education programs
Develops programs to increase the knowledge and skill of staff
Creates and/or implements audiovisual and written materials for education
Performs all other duties as assigned
Required Education or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in nursing or medical technology, or related field.
Preferred Registration, Licensure and/or Certification
Current Certification in Infection Prevention and Control
Current registration or license with experience in the state of Kansas as a Registered Professional Nurse, medical technologist, or clinical laboratory scientist preferred
Preferred Education or Experience
Master’s degree in public health is preferred.
Minimum of 1-3 years of infection prevention and control experience
Knowledge in hospital epidemiology principles, infectious diseases, sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection practice
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and patient safety principles in infection control and prevention in the patient care environment
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
Above to teach subject matter to others or train others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice or make recommendation on the basis of technical disciplines
Excellent organization skills
Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities and prioritize and schedule accordingly
Must be able to successfully and effectively communicate with a variety of personnel, patients and physicians
Team building, conflict resolution, and communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to develop facility educational and research policies and programs, quality improvement programs, and operational policies and procedures
Work collaboratively with other departments and physicians
